LongTail Audio releases KonvIR Lite, a FREE simulated reverb plugin for macOS and Windows.

KonvIR uses acoustic simulation to recreate the character of real spaces virtually. The free plugin from LongTail Audio offers four distinct spaces:

• Nantes Cathedral
• The Music Room
• The Cabinet Room
• The Church of Light

When we think about the character of real spaces, we think of convolution reverb, and most of these plugins feature impulse responses from unusual and diverse spaces, ranging from random stairwells to famous halls (check out the excellent Airspace by Mode Audio).

It might seem obvious to focus on the Gothic artistry of Nantes Cathedral, which took over 450 years to complete, or Tadao Ando’s modern masterpiece, the Church of Light in Ibaraki, Japan.

However, I can’t help but think that the Cabinet Room in the White House might be the most random and unexpected space yet.

If you purchase the KonvIR PRO ($19), you can go further down the West Wing, all the way to the Oval Office (15 iconic spaces in total, and over 100 listening positions).

KonvIR Lite doesn’t use traditional impulse responses derived from on-location recordings.

Instead, LongTail Audio’s proprietary acoustic simulation engine virtually rebuilds spaces based on precision geometry. Since the simulation engine models every physical property of a specific location down to the last millimeter, it can accurately simulate how sound interacts with every element of that location.

I imagine there will be fans and detractors of the simulated, not sampled, approach.

The simulated approach loses the charm of almost having one foot in the door of these special places, but somewhat ironically, precision simulations often produce more organic behaviours.

One of the most cited arguments for modeled pianos over sample-based libraries is that they can be more responsive to your playing.

I was more than happy with Keyscape until Pianoteq’s Shigeru Kawai SK-EX came along; no thanks to IK’s recent Group Buy, I can now add Pianoverse to the mix, and my favorite changes by the day.

Anyway, in a similar vein, LongTail Audio claims that its approach produces the most organic response, creating spaces that feel more alive than those of a traditional IR.

Each space in KonvIR Lite includes multiple listening positions, providing variations of each environment.

The four spaces offer different character profiles, from epic to more intimate.

Nantes Cathedral is quite intense and haunting, which is ideal when texture and atmosphere take priority over absolute clarity.

The Music Room is a happy medium between the grandeur of Gothic architecture on the largest scale and the clarity of a smaller space.

The last two, the Cabinet Room and Curch of Light, are less complex spaces, in many ways, and the Church of Light is my favorite of the bunch.

It has the clarity of a clean, minimalist space with a unique twist, thanks to the angled facade that extends from the entrance, cutting into the simple rectangular shape.

The interface includes separate Dry and Wet controls, as well as Pre-Delay and Low Cut controls.

KonvIR Lite is available in 64-bit AU, VST3, and Standalone formats for macOS (10.15 or later) and Windows (10/11).
