Tsuga Audio created Envosound, a free retro-gaming-inspired synth for macOS and Windows with ambient and experimental music producers in mind.
The free synth combines the nostalgic sound of 80s gaming hardware with modern features and effects.

Much of Envosound’s 80s gaming character comes from the relativistic arpeggiator, similar to those that created level-defining ostinatos on classic video games.
You can select a scale for your patterns, including chromatic, and you even have some microtonal options. The Tuning section allows you to create either perfectly smooth transitions or weird, almost glitchy patterns/flurries.
Another feature that might help you achieve the vintage-gaming sound is the beat-locked gliding clock.
The Clock feature keeps those complex patterns perfectly in sync when experimenting with tempo changes. A tempo increase is almost a sure sign of approaching a level boss in the 2D gaming world.
Envosound offers two distinct noise sources: Simplex and Retro.
Retro leans into the retro-gaming vibe, while Simplex delivers a smoother, more versatile character.
Envosound also features an envelope-controlled multi-mode filter, a Flow Visualizer, and built-in effects.
The interface matches the sound, blending nostalgia with modern features. The overall style is very retro, with features like the Flow Visualizer giving it a cutting-edge look.
The Flow Visualizer provides a real-time, dynamic waterfall display that shows how your sound evolves over time.
The built-in effects include a tempo-synced delay and reverb.
You can do more than recreate your favorite game themes with Envosound; it’s even very good at the kind of non-distinct rhythmic noise that suits all sorts of media composition.
But, I can’t help but think my favorite sound is the very simple arpeggiated triads at very high tempos; the sort that you’d hear from almost every game in a video arcade, once upon a time.
