HoRNet Plugins has released HoRNet TapeLite, a free tape saturation plugin for macOS and Windows.
TapeLite is a straightforward tape machine emulation designed to add non-linear behavior to clean digital recordings. There’s no trial period and no copy protection for this one. You just create a free HoRNet account, download the freebie, and keep it forever.
The plugin is based on a specific hardware reference: the Otari MX80, a professional multitrack tape machine commonly used in the late analog era.
Rather than modeling multiple machines, TapeLite focuses on this single deck and offers two classic tape speeds: 15 IPS and 30 IPS. Each speed alters the frequency response, the saturation curve, and the low-end behavior.
At 15 IPS, the sound is thicker, with a more pronounced low-frequency head bump and (to my ears at least) heavier saturation. This setting works well on drums, bass, electric guitars, or anything that benefits from added density.
Switching to 30 IPS results in a tighter low end and more extended high-frequency response, making it suitable for vocals, acoustic instruments, and even bus processing.
The control set is minimal. Input and Output knobs handle gain staging, which is essential for dialing in the amount of saturation without being fooled by level changes. The Bias control adjusts the tape’s magnetization behavior, subtly affecting high-frequency response and distortion texture.
The included Mix knob lets you blend the processed signal with the dry input for more subtle results.
Internally, TapeLite runs at 64-bit precision with fixed 4x oversampling. HoRNet chose not to include adjustable oversampling or automatic gain compensation, keeping the workflow simple and CPU usage constant.
That said, despite the oversampling, the plugin is light enough to use across multiple tracks in a session. It worked like a charm on my M1 MacBook Air.
TapeLite uses the same core DSP engine found in HoRNet’s paid Tape MK2 plugin, but with fewer options. Tape MK2 expands the concept with multiple tape machines, adjustable oversampling up to 8x, and auto-gain features. TapeLite, by contrast, is designed as a more lightweight free alternative.
HoRNet TapeLite is available in VST3, AU, and AAX formats. It supports macOS 10.13 or later (including native Apple Silicon) and Windows 10 or newer.
