Despite offering many parameters to play with, Parallax is an intrinsically simple plugin.
Parallax features two distinct and contrasting engines: the Reality Engine and the Dream Engine.
These two engines are brought together by a single Morph knob that lets you drift between both worlds.
The Reality Engine focuses on clarity and definition.
The Dream Engine focuses on drifting movement and evolution.
So, you have these two engines where you tackle real-world mix problems before twisting and mangling your sound into something otherworldly (and bringing it back again).
Once you have everything in place and sitting as it should, you can use the Morph knob to create interesting transitions.
I like morph controls that shift multiple parameters at once, whether it’s a plugin or a hardware synth. Anything that makes it easy to craft diverse and complex transitions on stage or for cinematic composition is invaluable.
If you look at some of the Dream Engine parameters (Blur, Smash, Drift, Delay, Phase, etc.), you get a clear idea of how much you can move and distort the sound.
I like huge, dramatic transitions for high-impact drops in electronic music, and more so for scoring video when you have visuals to support the transition from one world to another.
But another thing I like about Parallax is that the transition doesn’t need to be over-the-top.
If you have a very repetitive track, using Parallax to add some space, depth, and subtle movement to a chorus is a great way to add variation without a complete departure from the theme.
And doing those things with one plugin and the Morph knob is a quick and easy way to ensure your transition is smooth and musical, not clunky and awkward.
Ultimately, the more complex and obvious changes are more exciting, but it’s good to see that Parallax has a wider range of applications.
