MasterMind is basically an all-in-one tool for handling the main stages of mastering in a single plugin. It substitutes most of the plugins I typically use on my master bus.
The signal chain runs left to right through five sections. Match, Stereo Width, Optimizer, EQ, and Limiter. Each can be toggled on or off independently.
Match EQ
The Match section is an EQ matching tool. You play five seconds of a reference track with the Source button active, then five seconds of your own track. MasterMind learns both EQ curves and lets you dial in how much of the reference curve to apply to your mix.
The manual recommends keeping the Match amount around 20-30%, since a full 100% match rarely works well given the differences in arrangement and instrumentation between tracks.
I don’t use this feature heavily because every mix is different, but it’s a handy way to get your mix’s frequency balance closer to a commercial reference without manually adjusting an EQ.
The Optimizer
The Optimizer applies an algorithm that adds saturation, slight compression, and broad frequency shaping to make the signal feel fuller and more cohesive.
The exact processing isn’t documented in detail, but in practice, it adds a little bit of warmth to the low end and introduces subtle compression and saturation to increase the loudness.
I like that it’s controlled with a single knob, and I think it’s most effective in small doses. It’s pretty useful for pulling a mix together, especially if you’re new to mastering.
Stereo Width
The Stereo Width control adjusts the stereo image from -100 to +100. It’s simple and sounds good, but worth being careful with at extreme settings to avoid phase issues.
You should definitely check your bass in mono when applying this.
The Equalizer
The EQ section includes low- and high-shelf filters with adjustable frequency and gain, plus a tube saturation control that adds second-harmonic richness.
It’s pretty useful for use on the master bus and for cleaning up the signal before the limiter.
The Limiter
The Limiter section includes gain, threshold, output ceiling, and its own saturation control.
The built-in analyzer displays the input signal, the signal before limiting, and the output after limiting, so you can see exactly what each stage is doing to the frequency balance and dynamics.
Get MasterMind
MasterMind uses internal 64-bit processing and supports up to 16x oversampling. Another cool thing is that it doesn’t require iLok. A free 15-day trial is available if you want to test before buying.
