Free Amorph AI-driven text-to-DSP plugin gets a major visual update

Artists in DSP have updated the free Amorph text-to-DSP plugin, which now lets you create custom user interfaces.

We looked at Amorph earlier this year, and as with many things AI-related, it comes with seemingly limitless potential and just as many divided opinions.

If you missed Amorph on its initial release, here’s a quick recap.

Amorph is a text-to-DSP plugin that allows you to create any instrument or effect you can imagine from simple, plain language prompts.

Potentially, Amorph is every plugin you’ll ever need inside a single plugin, and you don’t need any coding knowledge to use it.

When you submit a simple prompt, like “Make an overdrive effect similar to the Ibanez Tube Screamer TS808”, Amorph will create an AI prompt that you can copy and paste into any Large Language Model, such as ChatGPT.

The LLM will then create a script that you can copy and paste back into Amorph to compile your plugin.

That’s the basic process, but it’s important to curb your expectations, as Amorph is in open beta and will undoubtedly improve significantly over time.

Additionally, results will vary depending on the thing you’re trying to create, and, at times, you may need to specify more details.

In short, you may be amazed by some results, and not by others, but experimentation is what the open beta phase is all about.

This latest update introduces a few significant additions.

Artists in DSP have put together a new walkthrough video covering the update, but here are the highlights.

The first new addition is custom user interfaces, something I know many in the community have been asking for.

Customization lets users design and tweak the interface’s appearance to suit the current creation, whether it’s modern FX or a vintage synth patch. I think providing custom interfaces will add another layer that many users will appreciate.

The update also introduces Amorph MIDI, a new plugin variant. Amorph MIDI means you aren’t restricted to audio effects/synths, and you can now generate custom arps and sequencers, etc.

The general workflow has seen some improvements, too, including cloud-based preset browsing directly inside the plugin (previously manual installs per patch). The aim is that every user will be able to share their patches via The Hub in the future.

The update also addresses prior bugs to improve the user experience.

Amorph is available in AU and VST3 formats for macOS (10.15 or later) and Windows (10/11).
