DsgDnB gave us several freebies earlier this year, including DuckTool, Scyllascope, and KickSpace. Their latest release, albeit still in testing, is Cartridge, a free sampler/slicer for macOS, Windows, and Linux.
You might remember that those plugins were at differing stages of development when released.
Cartridge is a similar release, in that it’s still in testing. While it’s a functioning plugin, the developer warns that bugs are to be expected and has created a Telegram chat to discuss issues and feedback.
Cartridge is a multi-mode sampler/slicer, available for macOS (AU, VST3), Windows (VST3), and Linux (VST3, LV2).
Whether you’re a sample-slicing ninja who chops it up every day, you rarely use samples, or you’re a complete beginner, it’s always good to have new tools that offer a different workflow.

Working fast and efficiently is always important with samples, but maintaining a unique style (or as close as you can get) is vital, and plugins that offer a different approach help us do so.
Earlier this year, we covered Intersect, a free and open-source sample slicer, and now we have Cartridge to add to the list.
As for Cartridge, it has four playback modes:
- ADSR – Classic envelope-driven sampling
- One – One-Shot playback
- MSEG – Allows you to draw custom volume curves
- Slice – Full sample slicer with MIDI export
Between the four modes, you’re covered for everything from basic sample trimming/tidying and shaping to glitchy remixing or creating playable instruments across the keyboard.
The plugin supports pitch bend and MIDI CC, which opens up another level of performance.
Additional features include: auto-normalise and root note detection, looping with fades, and phase-click protection.
You also have a Legato function for seamless transitions, and a recent update means that the Hold function in Slice mode now works with Legato enabled.
One of the most interesting features is the ability to change pitch without altering the playback speed.
Although Cartridge works in all popular DAWs, it offers deeper integration for Reaper (more info on the website).
You can download Cartridge for free with no feature restrictions, but if you want to remove the small badge on the GUI (and support the developer), you can make a one-time purchase or subscribe via Patreon/Bootsy to get a key.
