Developer Pixelsncodes has released Lumen, a free Windows-only open-source synth that turns images into sound.
Lumen is a free and open-source wavetable synth that turns images into sound.
Pixelsncodes created Lumen using the Claude AI coding agent.
The synth features two wavetable oscillators, each with dedicated controls, including Morph, Pan, Unison, Detune, Width, and Blend.
You can add depth and texture via the multi-wave sub-oscillator, multi-mode noise generator, and state-variable filter with drive, respectively.
Additionally, Lumen offers three ADSR envelopes and three multi-wave LFOs with drag-and-drop functionality.
There’s also a built-in multi-FX section with Drive, Chorus, Delay, and Reverb.
With all that said, the most unusual feature is the image-to-wavetable engine that reads your image’s bytes and turns them into a wavetable.
You can drag-and-drop any image.
While it’s an unusual feature for me, at least, it’s not new; various synths/plugins translate pixel brightness into sound, like Serum or the Image2Wavetable Max for Live device in Ableton.
I’ve never used such a tool, but it could be a fun way to randomise your sound.
The interface has two views: Play and Deep.
The Deep view lets you tweak all the above-mentioned features, while the Play view offers a simplified setup with the image-to-wavetable engine and four macro controls.
The macro controls are Tone, Motion, Space, and Texture. These controls provide a more immediate way to explore shifting multiple parameters simultaneously.
Lumen comes with 32 presets split between Bass, Leads, Pads, Keys, and Textures.
I’ll give it a try when the macOS version comes (it’s in development).
Right now, Lumen is available in VST3 and Standalone formats for Windows via GitHub.
AI-assisted/powered/created plugins aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, and that’s fair enough.
But more and more releases are built using AI coding agents or utilise AI in one way or another for various features, and there’s no sign of it slowing down yet.
Something that is everyone’s cup of tea is an exclusive discount, and we’ve got one to offer. Get $10 off Orra EQ and Orra Press using the code BPB39.
