X-Audio has released FAULTLINE, a free glitch, beat-repeat, freeze, and bitcrush effect for macOS and Windows.
The old DBlue Glitch was one of the first plugins I used when I started making music, and I still have a soft spot for that kind of instant destruction. I haven’t found a replacement glitch plugin since then. Nothing really stuck with me, but I still pay attention whenever a new free one appears.
FAULTLINE is good. It is not something I will immediately build into my core sound design workflow, but it is worth a try if you need quick glitches, stutters, freezes, and transitions in your DAW.
The website looks AI-generated to me, and the interface might be, too, but the plugin itself worked fine in my test. It feels like a well-made freebie, especially if you want glitchy effects rather than a deep modular glitch lab.
The main tools here are Beat Repeat, Freeze, a Glitch engine, and Bitcrush. Beat Repeat handles tempo-synced slice repeats and stutters, Freeze captures a slice into a held texture, and Bitcrush adds digital degradation on top.
FAULTLINE also includes a seed-driven event engine, so the results are deterministic. In other words, the same settings should bounce and recall the same way instead of changing randomly every time you reopen the project.
It’s one of the things that annoyed me in DBlue Glitch, where stutters and other effects would be fully randomized on export, so you’d never know what you’ll get. Good to see it fixed here.
There are 40 factory presets covering drums, vocals, FX, transitions, freeze pads, and build-ups. You also get a preset browser, A/B compare, global bypass, shuffle, and the Hit control for instant full-wet glitch bursts.
All of that makes FAULTLINE useful on a variety of stuff, from drum loops and vocal chops to full buses when you want a quick break, repeat, or freeze before a drop or transition.
To download FAULTLINE, you need to enter your name and email address. After confirming the email, you are taken to the download page. The download is 6.5 MB (by the way, BPB readers have been asking for download details, so I’ll be adding this kind of stuff to future articles).
FAULTLINE v1.0 is available in AU and VST3 formats for macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) and VST3 format for Windows.
