Developer Rust Romance has released Drive in my head, a free saturation plugin for Windows and macOS.
Drive in my head is a physically modeled op-amp line-driver plugin. The developer says it is not designed as an obvious distortion or fuzz effect. Instead, the idea here is to give clean sources the feel of passing through an analog amplification stage.
I think the interface looks very clean and professional, which is surprising because this appears to be the only audio plugin currently available from Rust Romance. For a first free release, it looks nicely polished, and I’m looking forward to seeing what the developer does next.
Of course, we already have a very big number of free saturation plugins, so any new one needs a different angle to make it worth downloading. What I like here is the attention to detail and the way you can fine-tune the virtual circuit instead of just choosing a broad tape, tube, or console vibe.
That makes Drive in my head fun to experiment with. Most saturation plugins focus on giving you a particular flavor, which is definitely useful, but this one lets you tweak the internal components to customize that flavor.
The plugin models fifteen op-amps, including NE5532, TL072, OPA2604, OPA627, API2520, BA283, LM358, LM741, CA3080, and LM13700. Each model is based on data-sheet parameters and topology, so changing the op-amp can alter the weight, thickness, and top-end behavior without using a normal tone control.
After the op-amp stage, you can choose one of five coupling capacitor types. The options are None, Film, Oil, Electrolytic, and Aged Electrolytic. This basically gives you the range from cleaner behavior to older consumer electronics-style color.
Analog Mode introduces subtle power-rail ripple and input offset drift, so you get a slight amount of movement over time. The 2X mode sends the signal through a second linked copy of the same op-amp and capacitor stage, so it doubles the color and boosts the distortion.
To download Drive in my head for free, you need to complete the checkout process on the Rust Romance website. After entering your name and email address, you will receive a ZIP download containing the macOS and Windows versions, along with a license key that you enter when launching the plugin for the first time in your DAW. The ZIP download is 30 MB.
Drive in my head is available for Windows 10 or later as a 64-bit VST3 plugin. The macOS version requires macOS 10.15 or later and is available in VST3 and AU formats as a Universal Binary for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.
