UnplugRed and BlepFX have released Sucrose, a free harmonic and subharmonic generator for macOS, Windows, and Linux.
Sucrose was created as an entry for the 2026 KVR Developer Challenge, and I will cover several plugins I really liked from this year’s KVRDC. This is definitely one of them.
I love the overall concept a lot. I use harmonic processing a lot in my sound design work, and Sucrose did really well for that. It is not a regular distortion plugin, even though it can cover some similar tone-shaping territory.
The plugin uses a Hilbert transform-based phase multiplication technique to generate 2nd and 3rd harmonics while preserving dynamics. According to the developers, this approach produces a cleaner output with less intermodulation than traditional distortion.
There are three operating modes with 1, 4, and 16 bands, so you can choose between a more direct process and more detailed multiband harmonic generation. Sucrose is also zero-latency, and that is always useful for a plugin that you may want to use while working with complex FX chains during a sound design session.
The subharmonic side is especially cool. There’s a suboctave generator inspired by flip-flop-based suboctaving guitar pedals, and the “Subharmonix” option sounds great for making basses and kicks feel bigger.
You can also use the 2nd and 3rd harmonic controls to shape guitars and synths, helping them cut through a mix without relying on a more obvious distortion sound.
I’m also a big fan of UnplugRed’s other plugins and BlepFX’s work. Both are very talented developers, and this collaboration is a perfect match if you ask me.
Speaking of BlepFX, I highly recommend trying Filtrr if you missed it. It is a free nonlinear ladder filter and saturation plugin, and it is still one of the more interesting free filter effects around.
The Sucrose GUI is cool, too. It fits the sugary theme nicely, and the cute look makes the plugin feel more memorable than the generic audio tools we’re seeing lately. The fact that no AI was used in development is also a nice touch.
Sucrose is a collaboration where the DSP was handled by BlepFX and the interface by UnplugRed. The plugin is available under the GPL3 open-source license.
Sucrose is available in AU, CLAP, and VST3 formats for macOS, Windows, and Linux. It is 64-bit only.
