Jan Schulten has released RealCassette, a free cassette tape effect plugin and standalone app for Windows.
Most BPB readers already know that I absolutely love processing sounds with cassette tapes. That probably became obvious somewhere between BPB Cassette 808, BPB Cassette 909, and the newer BPB Cassette Drums plugin.
So yes, RealCassette is my kind of vibe. I also love the lo-fi computer nostalgia thing going on with the interface, and that the developer’s site feels like a nod to Windows 98. When I see that, it immediately brings back memories of my early days of making music on a computer. And yes, I am that many years old.
The graphics have a bit of that vibe-coded look, but I still dig the whole thing. This is pretty much what fun plugins are for me, especially when they are free.
RealCassette is definitely not the best cassette tape plugin out there. There are more polished cassette tape emulations if that is what you need (Portacrunch 424 is a recent one). But this one is fun, and I like it (and it’s free).
The plugin is based on real cassette measurements. Jan Schulten says every profile in RealCassette comes from an actual cassette found in his grandma’s attic, with each tape captured for its color, wobble, noise, and movement.
The main plugin controls cover Color, Instability, Wow/Flutter, Noise Level, Dry/Wet, Input, and Output. Color uses the tape’s measured frequency response, Instability adds measured dropouts and slow level drift, and Wow/Flutter replays the deck’s pitch curve. The spinning reels on the interface also move while audio passes through the plugin.
For me, the killer feature is varispeed in the standalone app. It changes speed and pitch like a tape deck speed knob, and that is awesome for sound design or crunching up drums. Instability and wow/flutter also work great when you want the sound to feel a little broken or unstable.
The standalone app can load WAV, AIFF, FLAC, OGG, and MP3 files, scrub the waveform, and render the result to a new WAV file. It also includes an output limiter/compressor with threshold, ratio, attack, release, and brick-wall safety.
RealCassette is available for Windows 10 and 11 in 64-bit VST3 format, and the download also includes the standalone app and Tape Profiler. All eight factory tape profiles are built in.
