OA-Labs has released OA-Phosphor-1, a free virtual analog synthesizer plugin for macOS.
The developer describes it as a synth for “controllable instability,” and I think it’s a good fit. Phosphor-1 can deliver the typical subtractive type of stuff too, but the fun, for me at least, starts when you make it drift, sag, wobble, and fall apart.
I have commented many times before that we are seeing a lot of vibe-coded plugins now, and I am trying to keep BPB news focused on the good free plugins rather than covering everything that lands in the inbox.
Phosphor-1 was created with AI assistance for coding, but this is not one of those one-prompt plugins. The developer is a designer and musician, and says the project took around two months, with time spent shaping the interface and tuning the sound.
I tested Phosphor-1, and it is a fun synth to try. If you like sounds that feel like they came off a warped cassette, or the kind of detuned tone you might associate with Boards of Canada-style textures, this one is worth a look.
The main control is Age, which affects the whole instrument at once. When you turn it up, the pitch, filter, level, and shape begin to drift together. The chaos engine adds movement that never quite repeats, and you can push it from subtle analog-style imperfection into something much less stable.
That whole setup resonates with me. I made BPB Dirty VHS for VHS-style wobble and degradation, and BPB Dirty LA for compression with extra grit. Phosphor-1 sits in a similar zone, but as an instrument rather than an effect.
The synth has two oscillators and a dedicated sub oscillator, with cross, ring, and hard-sync blending. There is a morphing multimode filter that moves through low-pass, notch, band-pass, and high-pass responses, plus a waveshaper for warp, curve, fold, and bias controls.
The generative arpeggiator is another highlight, offering groove, glitch, and per-step probability rather than only basic up/down patterns. You also get dual LFOs, amp, filter, and pitch envelopes, poly, mono, and legato modes, unison with spread and phase, glide, up to 4x oversampling, a preset browser, and 68 presets.
OA-Labs says Windows support is in testing, with a waitlist available now. Future additions may include reverb and delay, MIDI sync, pattern-following arp steps, expanded presets, and ongoing bug fixes.
OA-Phosphor-1 is available for macOS in AU and VST3 formats. The download is 18 MB, and entering an email address starts the free download.
