Venus Theory has released forms:steel Free Edition, a free handpan library for Decent Sampler.
We have covered a lot of Venus Theory freebies on BPB, including forms:tongues, forms:piano, and several Auras instruments. If you enjoyed those, this one is a super easy recommendation.
forms:steel has the same layout and quality I expect from Venus Theory’s free Decent Sampler releases. It is very playable, great for cinematic work and game audio, and it has some really fun sounds if you are looking for quick inspiration without having to manage a huge library.
The source instrument is a hang drum, which I think is the first in the FORMS series. Handpans can sound beautiful, but they are also tricky to sample due to their long resonances and sensitive dynamics. Venus Theory says every sample went through a manual denoising pass to preserve the tail without chopping off the natural decay.
A handpan note is as much about the bloom and sustain as it is about the initial strike, and forms:steel keeps a lot of the natural sustain. Also, you get the natural hand-played tones, but also more processed cinematic textures for pads, drones, and metallic atmospheres.

The Free Edition includes 15 natural performances and preparations. The full library has 40 presets, but the free version still gives you enough material to combine layers and build a range of moods from a compact source.
Like the other recent FORMS libraries, forms:steel uses a dual-source engine with two independent layer slots. You can blend a clean handpan strike on one side with a more atmospheric layer on the other, then move between acoustic and sound design territory without changing patches.
The Edit tab gives each layer its own pitch, panning, randomized stereo drift, transient control, filter, and filter envelope. Pulling back the transient can remove some of the percussive front edge and leave more of the ringing body, making these sounds useful for underscore and ambient beds.
The effects section adds Room and Hall perspectives, Drive, Chorus, Delay, and Convolution Reverb with custom impulse responses. That adds a lot of range, from intimate steel percussion to wide metallic washes.
forms:steel Free Edition is available as a name-your-price download from Gumroad. It requires the free Decent Sampler plugin, which runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux in AU, VST, VST3, AAX, and standalone formats.
