Decomposer has released Dert, a free distortion plugin with one knob and four increasingly mangled flavors of dirt.
If the developer name sounds familiar, Decomposer is the team behind Sitala. I love Sitala; it is one of my go-to tools when I want to load and play drum samples quickly without firing up a more complicated sampler.
Dert applies the same super-minimal philosophy to distortion. As you turn its only knob clockwise, the sound moves through overdrive, distortion, bitcrushing, and ring modulation, with each type crossfading into the next.
In other words, the knob does more than just increase the amount of a single distortion algorithm. Its character changes as you move through the range, which makes a complete sweep far more versatile than simply automating a conventional Drive control.
That definitely makes it less precise than a distortion plugin with separate controls for drive, tone, mix, and algorithm, but precision isn’t really the point here. Dert lets you simply tune the knob until the sound gets interesting, and then move on with the track.
I like its simplicity. It’s handy if you enjoy minimal plugins and want several different distortion flavors in one control.
Decomposer designed Dert for drums, and it naturally pairs with Sitala. A small amount can add grit to a snare or drum loop, while pushing it further can make a complete kit sound crushed and worn out.
The more extreme bitcrush and ring modulation section also turns the plugin into a creative effect. Automating the knob could work nicely for a short build or a fill before the drop.
It’s also useful for adding a bit of grit to basses, vocals, and synth pads. And while we’re at it, I also recommend our free BPB Dirty Filter for this type of coloration.
Interestingly, Dert began as a prototype for Sitala 3. The developer was exploring whether distortion and other effects could share a single macro control, and the experiment eventually became a separate plugin.
