Plugin Boutique is offering SSL Native X-Echo for only $15 until August 31, 2026.
The vintage-style tape delay typically costs $99, so the current deal knocks 84% off the regular price.
X-Echo takes inspiration from classic 1960s tape echo hardware such as the Echoplex, but it adds several convenient add-ons that would probably be difficult to squeeze into an old box full of moving tape.
The delay provides four switchable virtual tape heads and supports both tempo-synced and free-running delay times. You can shape the repeats with Wow & Flutter (my favorite!) and Saturation controls.
On the other hand, the modeled tape behavior includes hiss, soft clipping, and self-oscillation when you push the feedback beyond 100%.
The four-head layout makes it easy to change the cho’s rhythm without building a complicated multi-tap patch. There is also an EQ inside the feedback loop, so you can shape the tone as each repeat passes through the virtual tape machine again.
X-Echo is suitable for the familiar tape-delay jobs, from short slapback and warm vocal echoes to dub-style feedback that can quickly wander into chaos.
SSL also included a few useful modern touches. A one-knob Diffusion control smears the repeats into reverb-like ambiance, while the built-in De-Esser helps tame frequencies that become too prominent as they circulate through the feedback loop.
Freeze and Kill controls are available for building transitions, risers, and drops. The interface also provides waveform visualization, preset management, A/B comparison, and undo/redo controls. X-Echo can even use phase shifting to turn a mono source into a wider stereo effect.

SSL Native X-Echo is available in VST2, VST3, AU, and AAX formats for 64-bit hosts on macOS and Windows. A free iLok account is required for activation, although a physical iLok dongle is not required.
