Free Delay VST Plugins

Free Delay VST Plugins

Looking for the best free delay VST plugins for your DAW? I tested dozens of freeware delay effects, from analog tape emulations and clean digital delays to experimental multi-node echo processors, and picked the ones worth installing in 2026.

If you need a subtle slapback delay for vocals, a warm tape echo for guitars, or a massive feedback-driven delay for cinematic sound design, there’s a free plugin on this list that fits.

I evaluated each plugin for sound quality, ease of use, compatibility with modern DAWs, and how well it holds up against paid alternatives.

Free Delay VST Plugins (2026 Update)

These are the best free delay VST plugins in 2026, selected after hands-on testing:

  • Valhalla Super Massive
  • Deelay
  • Valhalla Freq Echo
  • NastyDLA mkIII
  • Hysteresis
  • CHOW Matrix
  • Tymee
  • DelaySon
  • Brigade Delay
  • Spirals
  • Echo1
  • QDelay
  • ÆLAPSE

Valhalla Super Massive

Valhalla Supermassive

Super Massive (also known as Valhalla Supermassive) by Valhalla DSP is a freeware delay VST plugin that makes any audio sound larger-than-life. It delivers monumentally large delay and reverb effects with wildly different tonal characteristics.

The available modes are named after galaxies and constellations, including Hydra, Gemini, Orion, Centaurus, Cassiopeia, Sagittarius, Great Annihilator, Large Magellanic Cloud, Triangulum, Andromeda, and more.

The interface lets you control the Delay Time, Warp, Mix, Width, Feedback Density, Modulation Rate, Density, and the filters. The GUI design is straightforward, and it helps the user get the job done quickly.

Each delay mode offers a different sound, with varying levels of complexity, size, and atmosphere. Some algorithms are better at delivering unique delay-type effects, while others excel as lush reverbs and simulations of otherworldly spaces.

YouTube video

Like many other sound designers, I use Super Massive as the main delay/echo plugin for cinematic sounds. It is one of the essential tools in my sound design toolkit, capable of turning dull sounds into never-ending soundscapes.

Super Massive is available for Windows and macOS, with native Apple Silicon support.

More info: Valhalla Super Massive

Deelay

Deelay by Sixth Sample

Deelay by Sixth Sample (developed in collaboration with Integraudio) is one of the most feature-packed free delay plugins.

It offers five delay modes (Normal, Reverse Forward, Pure Reverse, Chaos, and Reverse Chaos). My two favorites are the Chaos modes, which produce granular-style textures that can turn a simple input into evolving ambient pads.

The feature list is staggering for a freeware plugin.

Deelay includes a diffusion control that smears echoes into reverb-like washes, eleven distortion types (from subtle tape saturation to aggressive rectify and lightning modes), tape emulation with wow and flutter, ducking with attack/release controls, modulation, high-cut and low-cut filters, ping-pong mode, and stereo spread. There are also 100 factory presets, A/B testing, and a resizable interface.

I was blown away by the quality of Deelay when I first tested it. The diffusion control combined with the Chaos mode can create cinematic soundscapes that rival what you’d get from Valhalla Super Massive, but with a completely different flavor.

YouTube video

The delay time changes smoothly without zipper noise, which is a must for any delay plugin I use in production.

Multiple BPB readers have recommended Deelay in the comments section over the years, and it’s easy to see why. It’s a freeware delay plugin that competes with paid alternatives priced at $50–$100.

The only minor inconvenience is that you need to submit an email address to download it.

Deelay is available in VST3 and AU formats for Windows (8.1+) and macOS (10.9+), with support for Apple Silicon.

More info: Deelay

Valhalla Freq Echo

Valhalla Freq Echo

Freq Echo by Valhalla is a plugin that creates intense, psychedelic-sounding delays and echoes. It is more straightforward to use than the Super Massive delay listed above.

With only five controls on its GUI, the Freq Echo is convenient and user-friendly. Flexibility isn’t the key here. Freq Echo aims to achieve a specific “pitched” delay sound, which it nails well.

Aside from the usual Mix, Feedback, and Delay options, Freq Echo offers a frequency shifter and a pair of filters. The pitch shifter module provides the plugin’s signature “unstable” delay feel, leading to interesting, detuned sounds.

I typically use Freq Echo for quick slap-back delays and intentionally unstable echoes that sound great on percussion and slow arpeggios.

Freq Echo is available for Windows and macOS.

More info: Valhalla Freq Echo

NastyDLA mkIII

NastyDLA mkIII

NastyDLA mkIII by Variety of Sound is the latest version of one of the most respected freeware delay plugins.

The original NastyDLA appeared over a decade ago, and the concept has remained the same: take the classic chorus/echo combination, add some tape-delay simulation, and wrap it in a user-friendly interface.

NastyDLA mkIII update brings improved compression, cross-feedback delay, and gain staging modes, along with oversampling and VST3 support (two features users have been requesting for years).

The interface remains the same as previous versions, which is a good thing. It’s a busy layout with plenty of controls, but everything is sensibly organized and makes good use of space.

My favorite thing about NastyDLA is that it adds a ton of color and character to the signal. The feedback-driven delay adds extra harmonics and tape-style saturation that can turn a weak guitar or synth line into something much bigger.

I still use NastyDLA on vocals regularly. The built-in ducking allows the vocals to cut through the echo, and the Aged mode adds a vintage vibe that sounds great on more aggressive vocal tracks.

The only downside is that NastyDLA mkIII is Windows-only. Mac users looking for a similar analog tape delay character should check out DelaySon by Sonimus, listed further down on this page.

NastyDLA mkIII is available in 32- and 64-bit VST and VST3 formats for Windows.

Hysteresis

Hysteresis

Hysteresis by Glitchmachines is a delay plugin for modern sound design. It features a unique stutter effect and standard delay settings, including delay time, filter, and modulation.

The settings are divided into three parameters each (excluding modulation):

  • Stutter – Size, Speed, and Mix;
  • Filter – Floor, Rate, and Resolution;
  • Feedback – Time, Feedback, and Separation.

Hysteresis is available for Windows and macOS in AU and VST3 formats (64-bit). It includes over 100 presets to improve your sound design workflow.

If you’re looking for glitched, robotic delay sounds, this one is worth checking out.

I often use it as an inspiration tool for sound design. When working on a new cinematic sound, simply loading Hysteresis on a track and browsing through some of the presets will provide enough inspiration to create unique FX combinations.

CHOW Matrix

ChowMatrix is the SimCity of delay plugins.

CHOW Matrix by ChowDSP is a node-based delay plugin. Its internal processing chain is fully scalable, allowing you to build anything from simple delay effects to complex multi-node echo setups.

Each node adds a layer of complexity to the delay signal chain. The nodes are identical, each offering nine parameters, but you can change the parameters on each node independently of all the others.

The number of nodes you can add to the node tree is unlimited. You can use the CHOW Matrix to create a basic single-node delay or create extraordinary soundscapes using a large node tree.

Despite its complexity, the CHOW Matrix is relatively easy to use.

It provides some clever GUI shortcuts to speed up the workflow. For example, the position of each node in the editor sets that node’s pan parameter on the output.

CHOW Matrix is available on Windows, macOS, iOS, and Linux. It’s not for everyone, but it’s one of the most flexible delay plugins I’ve seen.

More info: CHOW Matrix

Tymee

Tritik Tymee

Tymee by Tritik is a straightforward delay plugin that I love using for lo-fi sounds.

If you’ve used Tritik’s Krush bit crusher or their premium Flaw lo-fi plugin, you’ll recognize the same philosophy here with simple controls and a high-quality sound.

Tymee features a ten-second delay line with a tap tempo function. In addition to the standard Delay and Feedback controls, you get a Degrade function (a down sampler) and a Lowpass filter with Resonance control.

There’s also a spectrogram display. It was originally included as a teaching tool, since the developer created Tymee for audio programming education, but it looks great in practice.

The Degrade and filter controls are where Tymee gets interesting. When you start dialing in the down sampler and sweeping the resonant lowpass filter, you can push it into almost acid-like territory.

YouTube video

I’d recommend Tymee for anyone who wants a free delay that excels at lo-fi textures. It won’t replace a full-featured delay plugin, but it fills a specific niche beautifully.

Tymee is available in AU, VST, VST3, and AAX formats for macOS (10.15+) and Windows (10+). No registration required.

DelaySon

Sonimus DelaySon

DelaySon by Sonimus is a tape-inspired delay plugin that recreates the warmth of vintage echo units.

If you’ve used any of Sonimus’ analog-modeled plugins (like SonEQ or Satson), you’ll recognize the same attention to analog character here. DelaySon is Sonimus’s first time-based effect, and it’s a confident debut.

The interface is divided into three clean sections.

The Color section offers modulation depth for wow/flutter-style movement, a tone control for shaping the brightness of the echoes, and a low-cut filter to keep the repeats from getting muddy.

The Time section handles delay time (in milliseconds or tempo-synced) and wet/mix balance.

The Delay section provides feedback up to 200% for self-oscillation effects, stereo widening via a left/right offset, and a Drive switch that adds tape-style saturation to the signal.

The modulation and tone controls are where the magic happens with DelaySon. They turn a basic delay into something far more musical, with that analog drift and warmth that makes tape delays so appealing.

YouTube video

Delay time changes are completely smooth with no zipper noise, which, for me, is essential for live tweaking.

If you like NastyDLA mkIII but need macOS support, DelaySon is an excellent choice. It’s my favorite Mac-compatible alternative that delivers a tape delay character similar to Variety of Sound’s plugin.

DelaySon is available in VST2, VST3, AU, and AAX formats for Windows (10+) and macOS (10.10+), with native Apple Silicon support. An email address is required to download.

Brigade Delay

Brigade Delay

Brigade Delay by Full Bucket Music is a faithful simulation of classic analog Bucket Brigade Device (BBD) delay lines.

It was developed by Björn Arlt, the German programmer behind a large catalog of quality freeware plugins, including the well-known Fury-800 and Ragnarök 2.0 synthesizers.

What I love about Brigade Delay is how it handles signal degradation.

Just like real BBD hardware, the signal quality deteriorates with longer delay times and lower clock rates. The Quality control lets you dial this degradation from clean to lo-fi — or, as the developer puts it, “send your hi-fi signals to hell.”

There are five delay time ranges (from 1ms to 2 seconds), an LFO for flanger and chorus effects, a freeze mode, and tempo sync (added in version 2.0 at user request).

Brigade Delay isn’t trying to do everything. It’s a specialist, and it excels at delivering that warm, slightly degraded analog delay character that BBD hardware is known for.

If you’ve ever missed the old ArcDev ET-301 or used a hardware BBD delay pedal, this is the closest free plugin equivalent I’ve found.

The CPU consumption is extremely low thanks to the native C++ codebase, and the format support is excellent: VST2, VST3, CLAP, AAX, and AU on both Windows and macOS.

Spirals

Daniel Gergely Spirals

Spirals by Daniel Gergely is a dual-delay plugin with pitch-shifting capabilities that ventures into shimmer-reverb territory. If you make ambient, cinematic, or experimental music, this one deserves your attention.

The plugin features two independent stereo delay lines that can be configured from parallel to ping-pong, with pitch shifting ranging from -2 to +1 octaves per delay line, plus fine detuning of ±100 cents. Cross-feedback between the two delay lines opens up complex, evolving textures.

It also offers reverse delays (assignable per channel), a resonant low-pass filter with an XY pad that adds saturation when pushed hard, adjustable diffusion to blend discrete echoes into lush reverb washes, and a freeze function for creating pads.

Spirals started as a free beta in 2022 and matured significantly with the 2025 updates, which brought a 5x performance improvement, smooth delay time changes without artifacts, and a proper preset browser.

I use the free version a lot in real projects. The main limitations compared to the $30 full version are the lack of tempo sync and the cap on oversampling at 2x.

I also featured Spirals in our “10 unusual free VST plugins released in 2025” roundup, and the 2025 release really does feel like the point where everything clicked. It’s one of the most inspiring free tools I’ve found for ambient sound design and shimmer-style effects.

Spirals is available in VST3 and AU formats for Windows (10+) and macOS (10.13+), with support for Apple Silicon. No registration is required for the free version.

Echo1

Echo1

Echo1 by voidDSP is a modern stereo delay with a generous set of built-in processing modules. Released in February 2026, it’s a strong debut from a new developer.

Echo1 is built around two independent delay lines, each with its own speed control.

The Sync button locks both lines together for simpler operation, but the plugin really shines when you run them independently for stereo delay effects. I especially recommend trying it on arpeggiated synths, where the stereo interplay creates a lot of movement.

Echo1 also includes a phaser and chorus module (each with rate and depth controls), an integrated reverb with a Size knob, high-cut and low-cut filters, a tempo-synced auto-panner, and separate Dry and Wet output knobs for precise level control.

Each module has its own bypass button, so you can toggle sections on and off without losing your settings. All processing modules affect only the wet signal, keeping things clean.

The interface is well-organized and easy to navigate despite the number of controls on offer. The built-in reverb is especially nice on guitars with a subtle slapback. It adds depth without needing a separate reverb plugin on the channel.

Echo1 is available in VST3 and AU formats for Windows and macOS (Intel and Apple Silicon). AAX support is listed as coming soon. No registration required.

QDelay

Tilr releases QDelay, a FREE feature-packed dual-delay plugin for macOS, Windows, and Linux

QDelay by Tilr is a multi-mode dual-delay plugin that packs an absurd amount of functionality into a free download.

Tilr was one of the most productive freeware developers of 2025 (his TIME-12 made our top 15 free plugins list), and QDelay is a strong start to 2026.

The core delay engine offers Normal, Ping-Pong, and Tap modes with independent left/right delay times. You can set delay times in seconds, straight, dotted, or triplet divisions.

From there, it goes much deeper: accent odd/even taps, offset swing and feel for rhythmic variation, modulate the delay line time, and duck the delayed signal. There’s also a reverse function tucked into the settings.

What really sets QDelay apart for me is the built-in tone-shaping section. You get a parametric EQ for shaping the feedback and input signal, a Saturation module with Color, Bias, Dynamics, and Drive controls, and a Tape section with Wow and Flutter settings.

These aren’t afterthoughts, either. They add an analog dimension to the plugin, making it more than just a typical free delay.

I tend to favor subtle delay effects most of the time, and a dotted eighth-note delay with some wow and flutter on electric piano or pad chords is exactly the kind of thing QDelay handles beautifully. But it has a wide range and can go from controlled musical echoes to pitch-shifted chaos when you want it to.

QDelay is available in AU, VST3, and LV2 formats for macOS, Windows, and Linux. No registration required.

ÆLAPSE

Smiarx ÆLAPSE

ÆLAPSE by Smiarx combines two classic effects in a single plugin: a tape-style delay and a reverb inspired by spring reverbs.

It’s the only plugin on this list that gives you both a delay and a full-featured reverb engine in one package (Echo1 has a very simple reverb), and either section can be disabled independently if you only need one.

The delay section is based on a tape-delay architecture and keeps things relatively simple — delay time, feedback, drive, high-pass and low-pass filters for shaping the repeats, and a Drift parameter that introduces subtle instability to the delayed signal. That slight unpredictability is perfect for dub-style echoes.

The reverb module offers more detailed control.

Parameters like Shape, Scatter, Chaos, and Tone let you sculpt the reverb’s character, while Length and Damping control the overall space and decay.

Despite being spring-inspired, it isn’t locked into traditional spring sounds. You can push it into more spacious, modern territory if needed. The stereo width control makes it easy to dial in anything from narrow reverbs for guitars and percussion to wide textures for synths.

YouTube video

The design deserves a mention, too.

ÆLAPSE is one of the best-looking free plugins I’ve seen recently. It’s clean, clearly laid out, and features an animated spring that reacts to incoming audio. It has all the polish you’d expect from a paid plugin.

ÆLAPSE is available in VST3, AU, and LV2 formats for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It’s hosted on GitHub and requires no registration to download.

FAQ

What is the best free delay plugin?

It depends on what you need, but if I had to pick one all-rounder, it would be Deelay by Sixth Sample. It covers five delay modes (including reverse and chaos), has built-in diffusion, eleven distortion types, ducking, modulation, and 100 presets — all for free. QDelay by Tilr is another strong contender, especially if you want built-in EQ, saturation, and tape processing alongside your delay. For cinematic sound design and ambient music, Valhalla Super Massive remains hard to beat.

Is Valhalla Super Massive really free?

Yes, Valhalla Super Massive is completely free with no limitations, no trial period, and no feature locks. Valhalla DSP offers it as a free download from their website. It works on both Windows and macOS and supports VST, AU, and AAX plugin formats.

What is the difference between delay and reverb?

A delay effect repeats the audio signal after a set amount of time, producing distinct echoes. A reverb effect simulates the sound of a physical space by creating many short, overlapping reflections that blend together. In simple terms, delay gives you audible repeats (like shouting into a canyon), while reverb gives you a sense of space (like playing in a concert hall). Some plugins, like ÆLAPSE and Valhalla Super Massive, blur the line between delay and reverb, offering both types of effects.

What free delay plugin is best for vocals?

NastyDLA mkIII is an excellent choice for vocal delays thanks to its ducking feature and warm tape character, though it’s Windows-only. Mac users looking for a similar tape delay sound on vocals should try DelaySon by Sonimus.

Are there free delay plugins for Mac and Windows?

Yes, the vast majority of free delay plugins support both macOS and Windows. Of the 13 plugins on this list, only NastyDLA mkIII is Windows-exclusive. Several plugins also support Linux, including CHOW Matrix, QDelay, and ÆLAPSE. Most modern freeware delay plugins also include native Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3) support.
