Shadaloo Audio DSP has made Density EQ, its four-band presence and weight-shaping equalizer, permanently free.
Fabio “Shadaloo” Caterino shared the news in the BPB Community yesterday (thank you!), explaining that he wanted to make the plugin accessible to anyone who would like to try it. Density EQ previously cost €19, but it is now available as a pay-what-you-want download on Gumroad.
You can enter zero to get it for free, or pay something if you would like to support future development.
We have featured several plugins from the developer this year, including the H tone and loudness enhancer, the one-knob Wide spatial enhancer, and the more recent Vinland Drive tape emulator, which I liked quite a lot.
Density EQ follows a similar streamlined approach we’re used to seeing from this dev, with four bands named Low, LM, HM, and High, each with gain and frequency controls.
The available frequency ranges are 60-250 Hz for Low, 250 Hz-1.2 kHz for LM, 1.2-6 kHz for HM, and 6-15 kHz for High. You can enable or disable each band independently, so it is easy to hear exactly what it contributes.
I like the clean design and simplicity here. If you need an EQ that is more optimized for coloring a sound and adding weight and presence than surgical cleaning and the basic mixing jobs covered by a standard parametric EQ, Density EQ is worth a try.
The developer suggests using it on the mix bus, vocals, 808s, synths, pads, plucks, and other electronic material. The idea is to shape the low end and push the sound forward without building a longer EQ chain.
There’s also an RMS Match control, which helps compare the processed and original signals at a similar perceived level. That is super useful with tone-shaping tools, because a louder result can easily sound better even when the actual EQ move isn’t helping.
You can choose between Normal, Ultra, and Extreme oversampling modes. Density EQ also includes 19 factory presets, A/B comparison, undo and redo, plus the ability to save and recall user presets.
Density EQ is currently at version 1.0.1. It is available in VST3 and AU formats for macOS, with a Universal build for Intel and Apple Silicon, and in 64-bit VST3 format for Windows.
The macOS download includes a PKG installer. Windows users receive a ZIP containing the VST3 file, which you copy to the standard VST3 plugin folder before rescanning your DAW.
The current Windows build is not digitally signed, so your system may display a security warning during installation.
