Analog Obsession has released ToneShaper, a free passive tone and body control plugin for macOS and Windows.
In this day and age of vibe-coded plugins, even a relatively simple freebie from a tried-and-tested indie developer like Analog Obsession feels like a breath of fresh air.
ToneShaper is a simple but effective tool for fine-tuning the tone of your tracks.
The Tone control uses an unusually shaped high-shelf curve. It’s somewhat similar to a tilt EQ in that you can turn it one way to darken the source and the other to brighten it.
Body works at the lower end of the spectrum, shaping the low-mid and mid frequencies. It can add weight to a thin sound or reduce some of the thickness when a track feels too congested.
That said, this is not a tilt EQ, since Tone and Body are independent rather than opposite ends of one curve. It fills a similar role, though, because it lets you make a broad tonal change pretty quickly without adjusting several parametric EQ bands.
The important technical detail is that ToneShaper is a fully passive-style design. Analog Obsession says the passive circuit loses roughly 20 dB of level internally, which the plugin restores with a clean boost.
There are no nonlinear elements in the signal path, so ToneShaper does not add saturation or modeled analog color. The Output control is clean, too.
ToneShaper follows the developer’s recent THEDI colored DI box plugin, but the two serve different purposes. THEDI is about adding color, whereas ToneShaper is designed to reshape the frequency balance without introducing harmonic coloration.
As with other current Analog Obsession releases, the interface is resizable from 50% to 200% using the handle in the bottom-right corner. You can save a resized instance as your DAW’s default preset so new instances open at that size.
The download process is about as easy as it gets. The Patreon post provides direct links without requiring an account, checkout, plugin manager, or license activation. The macOS installer is approximately 16.9 MB, while Windows users can choose between a 7 MB installer and a 10.8 MB ZIP archive for manual installation.
ToneShaper is available in VST3, AU, AAX Native, and AudioSuite formats on macOS 10.11 or later, with Intel and Apple Silicon support. Windows 10 and 11 users get VST3, AAX Native, and AudioSuite versions.
