Analog Obsession releases THEDI, a FREE colored DI box plugin

Analog Obsession has released THEDI, a free coloration plugin inspired by a famous colored DI box.

The developer describes THEDI as a “colored DI box in the box” that tightens the low end, enhances the mids, and adds sparkle to the high end.

Analog Obsession doesn’t name the exact hardware unit, but my guess is something in the A-Designs REDDI lane. REDDI is one of the best-known colored tube DI boxes for bass, synths, and line-level sources. Still, don’t take my word for it, especially since the Patreon post doesn’t refer to any specific unit.

Either way, THEDI is a very simple plugin. You get one main Level knob, which adjusts the amount of processing with gain compensation, a Mix knob for blending the dry and processed signal, and a Power switch for bypassing the plugin.

I tried it briefly, and this is basically a fun coloration plugin you can throw on a few tracks and quickly decide whether it helps. It is not a deep tone-shaping tool, but the main appeal for me is the ease of use. You can push the Level control, blend it with the Mix control, and see if it adds anything useful.

I like simple plugins, and THEDI definitely fits that category. The interface is clean, easy to read, and has everything you need without adding unnecessary controls. I’m not sure yet if I will keep this one in regular use, but if you like having a collection of coloration tools, it is worth checking out.

As usual with Analog Obsession, the download process is simple. The Patreon page provides direct download links for the Mac installer, Windows installer, and Windows ZIP version. The Mac download is a small 8.4 MB installer.

THEDI does not use oversampling, but Analog Obsession says it includes embedded lightweight anti-aliasing. The interface is resizable from 50% to 200% using the bottom-right corner handle.

THEDI is available in VST3, AU, and AAX Native/Audiosuite formats for macOS 10.11 or higher, with Intel and Apple Silicon support. The Windows version is available in VST3 and AAX Native/Audiosuite formats for Windows 10 and 11.
