Schallenberg Engineering has released Collision: Bongos, a free bongo sample library for the full version of Native Instruments Kontakt.
I haven’t used Schallenberg Engineering’s libraries before, but this is definitely a very cool freebie. It is fairly compact at 268 MB, but the sampling depth here is much better than you might expect from a free instrument.
The developer originally recorded various drums and percussion for its Collision series. Some of the material did not fit into a larger commercial package, so these recordings are being released separately for free.
Collision: Bongos captures a bongo from three positions in the recording room. Each position is available as an individual Kontakt instrument named Bongo C, Bongo L, and Bongo R, while the included Bongo Ensemble Multi combines all three in a single patch.
The library contains 387 audio files recorded at 48 kHz and 24-bit quality, with up to five dynamic layers and 11 round robins. There’s more than enough variation to keep repeated notes from sounding mechanical, and I enjoyed playing this one during the test.
You also get more editing control than the simple concept suggests. The Kontakt interface provides separate ADSR settings for each microphone, individual round-robin switches, customizable key mapping and outputs, adjustable sample onset, delay-compensated pitching, and a random-delay option for adding subtle timing variation.
The download is managed through the free Pulse application, which is a somewhat annoying extra step. After completing the free checkout, you receive a redemption key that you can add to Pulse, which then downloads and installs the library.
The main catch is that Collision: Bongos requires the full version of Kontakt 6.7.1 or newer. It is not licensed for the free Kontakt Player, so Player users will encounter its usual demo limitation.
