Fracture Sounds releases Blueprint: Textural Sax, a FREE experimental woodwind library for Kontakt Player

Blueprint: Textural Sax is the latest addition to the free and wonderful Blueprint collection by Fracture Sounds.

More specifically, it’s the latest addition to Blueprint’s Textural cinematic libraries.

Previous releases include Textural Cello and Textural Violin.

Like the other Textural libraries, Textural Sax isn’t about making an exact recreation of the instrument. It’s about taking the fundamental character of the tenor saxophone along with textural qualities and blending them with experimental sound design and resonances so that we think about using the saxophone in different ways.

The biggest difference between this release and a more traditional sax library is that it’s polyphonic. The thing I like most about Textural Sax being polyphonic is that it doesn’t sound like an ensemble of saxophones, and it doesn’t sound like a typical cinematic synth pad either.

You still get the initial warm texture that comes from each new note/breath from a sax, so it maintains its character while blending into an atmospheric pad.

Textural Sax comes from the premium instrument of the same name, featured in the new Trails II library. It includes all four articulations, a blend of microphone mixes(close, room, and resonant contact), and one Atmosphere layer from the full instrument.

The four articulations are Emergence, Reflections, Blooms, and Swells.

Emergence has lots of that traditional tenor sax character with a wavering texture that’s great for cinematic beds in any mood.

Reflections has a rhythmic quality that sounds really modern, and it’s very emotive.

Blooms is very contextual and works well in various settings, but I like the somber quality it brings.

Swells is less ambiguous than the others, and can help define harmonic choices amongst more freeform sounds.

All articulations can be enhanced with the Atmosphere layer, which comes from attaching contact mics to a thunder sheet.

You can solo the Atmosphere layer, and it sounds almost choral at times, which can be nice by itself or in conjunction with external sounds.

Textural Sax features four built-in effects: Dynamics, Lo-Fi, Delay, and Reverb.

The Dynamics parameter is important for expression; the Lo-Fi effect is lovely for subtle tape vibes or transformative impact; and the Delay and Reverb types help you get further into atmospheric sound design.
