Box Of Rules has released Box Of Synths, a free beta synthesizer that creates editable patches from written descriptions.
This is the most recent project by the developer behind Picking Fingers and the much larger Box Of Bass, which we featured recently.
Despite its prompt-based workflow, Box Of Synths is not designed to generate finished audio or complete songs. It’s a prompt-based synth to which you describe the sound you want, and the system turns that request into a parameter recipe for the built-in synthesizer.
The initial engine the plugin can access is basically a three-oscillator subtractive synth. Each oscillator offers saw, square, pulse, triangle, and sine waveforms, with octave, detune, pulse width, level, unison, and stereo spread controls.
There is also a sub-oscillator and noise generator, plus 12 dB and 24 dB low-pass filters, high-pass and band-pass modes, separate amplitude and filter envelopes, two LFOs, glide, velocity control, chorus, and delay.
The innovative part is how those parameters are selected. The first option uses Box Of Rules’ online database, which the developer says is based on measured synthesizers and extensive research. This mode does not use an AI model.
Alternatively, you can connect Box Of Synths to a local model through Ollama. The model runs on your computer, and you can continue refining the patch with written instructions rather than starting over each time.
The interface keeps previous versions of the sound, so you can move between different results, rate them, save the ones you like, and make further adjustments with the regular synth controls. It also provides generated macro controls for editing the most relevant parts of a patch more quickly.
This approach reminds me somewhat of the free VS-1 Versa Synth, although Box Of Synths makes the database-driven, non-AI option a central part of the workflow.
The developer is also building Synth.Directory, a separate community database documenting synthesizers used by different artists and records. It already contains over 59,000 records and 2,400 instruments and is an interesting companion project, though it is still a work in progress.
The free beta is limited to the first 1,000 signups. Enter your email address on the download page, then use the same address inside the plugin to receive a six-digit verification code. There is no conventional account or password, and the optional release-update checkbox is selected by default.
Database requests require an internet connection and are stored with your email address and installation ID for up to 12 months. Playing, editing, and saving patches works offline, as does local generation through Ollama unless you enable its database-assisted mode.
Box Of Rules says a permanent free edition will replace the beta, although its final feature set has not been decided yet.
Box Of Synths v0.3.0 is available in VST3 and standalone formats for Windows 10 or newer and Linux. The macOS 11 or newer version supports AU, VST3, and standalone operation on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs.
The macOS installer is signed and notarized. The Windows installer is currently unsigned, so Windows SmartScreen may require you to select More info and Run anyway.
