JohnmanJohnston has released DAWception, a free and open-source mini DAW that runs as a VST3 plugin inside another digital audio workstation.
The developer created it as a pretty clever workaround for the track limits in lower-tier software such as Ableton Live Lite, which allows a maximum of 8 audio and MIDI tracks.
You can load DAWception onto one of those tracks, and you get another arrangement timeline inside the plugin with an unlimited number of stereo audio tracks and groups.
I tested it in Studio One, and it works surprisingly well in practice. You can drag audio files onto the internal timeline, move and split clips, trim their edges, adjust clip gain, and snap edits to the grid.
This whole setup lets you consolidate finished parts in your main DAW, move them into DAWception, and free up its limited tracks for new material.
The mini DAW can scan and host VST3 plugins on individual tracks or across entire groups, with plugin delay compensation and reorderable processing chains. Every hosted plugin also gains a dry/wet slider, even if it does not provide one itself.
Automation is passed back to the main DAW through 128 relay parameters. You assign one of those inputs to a parameter belonging to a plugin hosted inside DAWception, then automate the corresponding DAWception control from the outer project. One input can also control several nested plugin parameters.
DAWception isn’t intended to replace a full free DAW. The current v0.1.0 release is built around imported audio and does not yet support MIDI, sidechaining, pitch shifting, or quantization.
The idea of running music software inside other music software isn’t entirely new, of course. FL Studio can operate as a plugin inside another DAW, while tools such as Kushview Element and DDMF Metaplugin host plugin chains inside plugins. However, a free multitrack audio timeline specifically designed to get around entry-level DAW track limits hasn’t been done before, as far as I know.
DAWception is available as a direct ZIP download with no checkout, account, or email submission. The plugin is only around 4 MB on Windows and Linux, while the Universal macOS archive is 6.6 MB.
Installation is manual: extract the archive and copy DAWception.vst3 into the standard VST3 folder. The Windows release requires Windows 10 or newer, the macOS Universal build supports macOS 10.11 or newer, and an x86-64 Linux version is also available.
One important warning for Mac users is that the plugin is not signed or notarized. It will initially be blocked by macOS, and the developer provides Terminal commands to remove the quarantine flag and apply an ad hoc signature. That extra step definitely makes this a release for more adventurous BPB readers, at least for now.
