Pizza Bagel Plugins has released Schmear, a streamlined vocal widener for macOS and Windows that is currently free instead of $19.
The new company comes from Los Angeles producer and vocal producer Justin Gammella. His credits include Benson Boone’s “Let Me Go” and vocal production on FINNEAS’ Optimist album.
Schmear is the classic micro-pitch widening trick but limited to three fixed choices: 3, 6, or 9 cents. Gammella says these are the settings he has used on almost all of his vocals for nearly a decade.
Under the hood, the plugin creates two modulated delay voices and pitches them in opposite directions. One sits slightly sharp on the left and the other slightly flat on the right, adding width around the original signal.
The three buttons give you a solid range of settings. Three cents adds a subtle shine, six produces a clearer doubling effect, and nine gives you the full smear. The large bagel controls the dry/wet balance, while separate Input and Output trims provide ±12 dB of gain adjustment.
I absolutely love the casual GUI. I am getting a little fed up with the same dark, oversized-knob, tiny-text interfaces that keep appearing on vibe-coded plugins, so this hand-drawn pizza bagel theme at least feels different.
Schmear works as a direct insert, but you can also place it on an aux send at 100% wet and control the amount with the send level. Remember that the two added voices raise the overall level, so the Output trim is handy for matching the processed signal against bypass.
The plugin is designed to remain centered and compatible when summed to mono, and it operates with zero latency.
It also includes A/B comparison, 40-step undo, a preset browser, a resizable interface, MIDI learn, and full parameter automation. You can actually try the effect in your browser, so it’s easy to hear the three settings before installing anything.
Getting Schmear requires you to complete a $0 checkout, after which the license is added to your Pizza Bagel Plugins account. Install it through the company’s unified installer, then sign in from the plugin to activate it. Offline activation is also supported. One license covers three computers, and there is no iLok requirement.
Schmear is available in VST3, AU, and AAX formats for 64-bit Windows 10 or later and macOS 13.3 or later, with native support for Intel and Apple Silicon. The developer has not announced when the offer ends, so grab it while it remains free.
