Versilian Studios has released Miscellania I, a horror sound library which is the first release in an upcoming series of free sample-based instruments.

A happy Halloween from everyone here at Versilian Studios with this fun little plug-in of six whole octaves (including black notes) of spooky effects and more, the first part of a series of light effects plug-ins to come out over the next few months.

Miscellania I is available for free download via Versilian Studios (14.9 MB download size, RAR archive, 32-bit & 64-bit VSTi/AU plugin format for Windows & Mac).

The instrument is based on audio samples of classic spooky sounds from horror flicks. You’ll find eerie piano melodies, weird synthesized sound effects, beast howls, chain rattles, wood hits, whistles, and so on.

The samples are spread across two keyboard octaves. There’s no way to manipulate individual samples. The user interface allows the user to tweak the global ADSR envelope, as well as gain and pan. The instrument also includes a built-in reverb module.

While the virtual instrument itself isn’t spectacular, I like the convenience of simply loading a sample library as a plugin-in. The included sounds are also quite interesting and can be useful. I’m looking forward to more releases like this one from Versilian Studios, however it would be awesome if they also included individual WAV files inside the pack or as a separate download.
