New plugin developer The Note Audio has released True Panner, a free stereo panning and spatial imaging utility for macOS and Windows.
The pan control in most DAWs changes the level sent to the left and right channels. However, and stuff like this never ceases to amaze me, our ears also use the tiny difference in arrival time between them to judge where a sound is coming from.
True Panner adds that second cue with ITD (Interaural Time Difference) panning. It introduces small timing differences between the channels to make a sound feel positioned in the stereo field as opposed to simply making it louder on one side.
Because the timing shift is frequency-independent, the plugin moves the source without applying the tonal filtering associated with some spatial effects. It is still worth checking the result in mono whenever you use timing-based stereo processing.
The interface combines Balance, Dual Pan, Width, Time Pan, Spread, and Output controls. Independent left and right pan settings provide more control over stereo sources, while the Width control lets you narrow or expand the image.
The real-time stereo field visualizer displays the signal’s spatial distribution while you make adjustments, and it really helps you figure out how the stereo setup is balanced. The developer also designed True Panner to use little CPU, so it’s ok to place it on multiple channels across a mix.
We recently covered the free HiPan dual-band panner, which separates the high and low frequencies before positioning them. True Panner is quite a bit different, though, because it combines regular level-based controls with time-based placement.
The Note Audio has also released Precision Delay for free. It provides independent delay, gain, mute, and polarity controls for the left and right channels. Delay values can be entered in samples, milliseconds, ticks, beats, frames, meters, feet, or inches, which is handy for aligning microphones, speakers, re-amped tracks, and other recorded signals.
To download either plugin, complete the €0 checkout with your full name and email address. You’ll need to register a free account. The download links and instructions are sent by email. Completing checkout also opts you into product updates and offers.
Neither freebie requires a license or activation after installation, and both can run offline.
True Panner and Precision Delay support VST3, AU, and AAX formats on macOS 13 or later and Windows 10 or later. The minimum specifications list an Intel i5 processor or Apple Silicon M1, 2 GB of RAM, 100 MB of free storage, and sample rates up to 192 kHz.
