Swiss developer BITLANTIS has released KVEIK 1.2, a major update to its block-based MIDI step sequencer for macOS and Windows.
KVEIK started as a drum sequencer, but version 1.2 adds a lot more melodic and harmonic functionality, so you can use it to sequence basses, synths, and other instruments from the same interface.
Obviously, KVEIK generates MIDI and makes no sound of its own. You route its output to software instruments or external hardware, with up to 16 tracks available inside one instance.
The workflow is built around pattern blocks. Each track can contain up to 16 blocks labeled A to P, which can be looped individually or dragged into a longer arrangement.
The pattern content and arrangement remain separate, so you can easily edit a block without rebuilding the song structure around it. Blocks, selections, or complete arrangements can also be dragged into your DAW as MIDI clips.
Version 1.2 introduces scale and harmony settings for each track, with 40 included scales and a custom mode. Notes drawn or randomized in the sequencer stay inside the selected key.
The new Chord lane stacks up to four notes per step, with 24 chord types and a Strum control to adjust their timing, direction, and velocity. Long notes and per-step legato make the sequencer more suitable for melodies and basslines, especially when controlling monophonic synths with glide.
Of course, KVEIK still provides detailed rhythm programming. Every step offers velocity, gate, pitch, probability, micro-shift, ratchet, and chord lanes, while Euclidean patterns can sit alongside manually drawn sequences.
There are 15 groove templates covering MPC and Logic-style swing, triplet and half-time shuffle, tight funk, humanized timing, and a Dilla-style lazy feel. Groove can be set per track, which means the hi-hats can move around while the kick stays straight.
Other useful touches include multiple playback directions, targeted randomization, step locks, velocity compression, and a Help mode that explains controls as you hover over them. MIDI files can be dropped back into KVEIK, with off-grid timing retained as micro-shift data.
KVEIK costs $49 as a one-time purchase. The unrestricted 14-day trial requires no payment card and downloads directly from the website. The installers are approximately 3.2 MB for macOS and 2.6 MB for Windows; Windows users may need to select More info and Run anyway on first launch.
A license can be activated on up to five machines, after which KVEIK runs offline. Version 1.2.3 is available as VST3 and AU for macOS and VST3 for Windows.
