MZTK has released a beta version of Z-Drum, a forthcoming freeware analogue style drum machine in VSTi plugin format for Windows.

Z-Drum VST ‘analogue’ beatbox beta. Voices are generated by synthesis, with multiple outputs + monitoring, with alternate GUI configuration. Need to spend more time on drum voice parameters.

Z-Drum is available for free download via KVR Audio (1.39 MB download size, ZIP archive, 32-bit VSTi plugin format for Windows, made with SynthEdit).

The instrument comes with a built-in sequencer which can work in pattern and song mode. Individual patterns are stored as VST presets, which means that you can easily browse through different patterns by sending program change messages from you MIDI controller.

Z-Drum is not a sample based drum machine. Instead, it relies on synthesis for creating sounds and allows real time tweaking of drum parts. It features 8 individual drum parts: bass drum, snare,  hi-hat, clap, rimshot, tom, tabourine, and ride.

I really liked the sounds which I was able to generate with Z-Drum during the short test run. The drums sound soft and warm, reminiscent of the sounds of old Roland drum machines.

This isn’t a finished product, but I’m sure that drum machine lovers such as myself will appreciate it as a fun tool for jamming and creating ideas. Definitely give it a go if you enjoy playing with step sequencers and old drum machines.
