Amateur Tools DSP has released a free public beta version of Voltage Phase Module, a forthcoming VST plugin which modulates the phase of one signal using the amplitude of another audio signal on the input.
Voltage Phase Module is an amateur quality sound manipulation tool for use in a Digital Audio Workstation such as Reaper, Cubase, Ableton, FL Studio, Renoise, and any other Windows based software that utilizes VST™ technology. It has one function and purpose, to phase modulate one audio stream with another. This means the amplitude of one signal changes the other audio signal’s speed.
This plugin is quite unlike any other plugin I’ve seen or used before. Basically, it takes the amplitude of one audio signal and uses it to modulate the phase of another audio signal, leading to some incredibly weird tones. The results can vary from slight digital distortion to complete mayhem.
The developer says that his goal when creating the plugin was to offer a tool which would allow the producers to treat their DAW like a modular synthesizer. With that in mind, you’ll need a DAW which allows you to route multiple audio streams to a single plugin in order to use this effect the right way. The plugin features four inputs and you can feed mono or stereo audio tracks into it.
Although the plugin is currently available as a free download, you’ll need to listen to some free music before using it on your machine. Here’s an excerpt from the manual:

I took a listen to some of the tracks on the SoundCloud page linked above, and I think that you can hear Voltage Phase Module in action on some of the tunes. For example, the distorted sound in Fusonata Wip track (embedded below) sounds like some of the stuff I was able to generate with this free plugin. You’ll find some additional audio examples here.
Definitely grab this one if you’re into sound design and if you enjoy experimenting with weird new effects! Also, if you’re bored of using your bitcrusher or distortion effects, Voltage Phase Module will feel like a breeze of fresh air.
