KeyPleezer has introduced LivingRoom Upright Piano – Free Edition, a freely downloadable upright piano sound library available in various formats.
LivingRoom Upright Piano – Free Edition is a free piano sample library based on the full version of KeyPleezer’s LivingRoom Upright Piano. The library comes in a variety of different sample formats. You can download pre-made presets for Native Instruments Kontakt and EXS24, as well as a version of the instrument that was designed to work with Garageband 10.0+ and Logic Pro X 10.0.7+ on Mac. Even if you don’t own any of the supported software, you can still load the included WAV samples in your favorite digital audio workstation or sampler VST plugin.

For this version of the instrument, KeyPleezer sampled every white piano note with six velocity layers in total. There are three velocity layers with the sustain pedal up and three layers with the pedal down. The recording microphone was placed right above the keys and very close to hammers. As a result, the samples capture the piano’s tone with plenty of detail at the cost of sounding quite bright, with lots of information in the higher frequencies. This can, of course, be remedied with a filter or an equalizer VST plugin. The full version of LivingRoom Upright Piano features three additional microphone positions.
I tested the NI Kontakt version of the instrument and my first impressions were very good. For a relatively compact piano sample library, LivingRoom Upright Piano – Free Edition provides plenty of detail and an authentic upright piano sound. The front panel features two control knobs – one for adjusting the instrument’s dynamic response and one for setting the output volume. From my experience, the dynamics control should be pushed to 100% to make the instrument more expressive.
