SampleScience Releases FREE Analog Waveforms Virtual Instrument

SampleScience has released Analog Waveforms, a freeware sample-based virtual instrument in VST and AU plugin formats for digital audio workstation software on PC and Mac.

Analog Waveforms is based on a set of four raw analog waveform multi-samples. The source sounds were recorded from the Mopho hardware synthesizer manufactured by Dave Smith Instruments. Each oscillator waveform was sampled note by note across seven octaves, with 10-minute long recordings. This way, each note has a corresponding sample, capturing the full chromatic range of the analog oscillator. The instrument includes four multi-sampled Mopho waveforms: Sawtooth, Triangle, Saw-Triangle, and Pulsewidth 40%.

The recorded samples have loop points, enabling infinite sustain. SampleScience has made the recorded samples available to the public domain. They are available for free download (355 MB download size) separately from the plugin. The Analog Waveforms plugin is freeware, but it isn’t public domain.

As for the interface, Analog Waveform features a rather advanced sound engine. The user can adjust the ADSR volume envelope, panning, volume, reverb depth, and glide amount. SampleScience has also included a multi-mode filter, as well as an LFO-based modulation section with the choice of multiple waveform shapes and modulation targets. This is pretty much the maximum amount of functionality provided by the Maize Sampler engine, which was used as the platform to develop the plugin.

On a related note, SampleScience has recently released the Vaporwaves 2 plugin. It is another rompler instrument, although this one is based on a set of 45 multi-sampled synthesizer patches that were recorded from an actual VHS tape. More precisely, SampleScience recorded an old hardware synthesizer to a VHS tape and then resampled those sounds back into the computer for further editing. Fans of synthwave music and 80s sounds should definitely check it out.

Analog Waveforms is available for free download via SampleScience. There is no signup or activation required. Optionally, users can donate to SampleScience to support future development. Both 32-bit and 64-bit host applications are supported.
