Ah, the 60s. The birth of psychedelic rock, the Beatles’ first arrival in the United States, and (mostly) no Nixon. The era where the modern tone and mixing techniques that we take for granted nowadays really started to take shape.

Out of all the studio tools that became popular in that decade, one of the most prominent ones is undoubtedly the echo.

The classic tape delay effect was first utilized in the mid-50s to create the “slapback” effect that dominated rock & roll, country, and rockabilly records of the time. These original units only had a very short repeat rate of about 150 to 200ms.

Later, when the rate was increased further, artists were finally able to use these machines for more spacial and experimental sounds.

Of these units, Binson‘s devices reigned supreme.

They were extensively used by The Shadows both in and out of the studio, on the iconic drums from Led Zeppelin’s “When The Levee Breaks,” and literally defined Pink Floyd’s sound throughout the 70s.

Pulsar Audio’s offering is a faithful, 1:1 emulation of the classic Echorec 2.

First off, the delays can be set to “off,” meaning that the plugin can be used just to color your sound – something that’s very relevant in today’s analog-centric mixing approach. Below that is the disk speed knob, which can be kept in “free” mode (including tap tempo), or set to respond relative to your DAW’s tempo in “host” mode.

The plugin boasts three modes, namely Echo, RIP, and Swell.

Echo is the classic echo sound you’d expect from this device, with no repeats, RIP is a straight analog delay, and Swell loops the signal and feeds it back to the original signal, creating this crisp overlapping delay sound.

There’s also a tone knob, three different levels of wear from “Mint” to “Used,” Stereo Drift, and a faithful, in-depth emulation of the original device’s tube section with its own dedicated Drive knob.

The original Echorec had a unique sound even among its peers during its heyday. Nowadays, tape emulation is seen as one of the key ingredients to a warm, classic analog sound. Even without its extensive echo/delay section, Pulsar’s offering is an absolute bargain at €29.

Echorec is available in VST, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin formats for digital audio workstations on PC and Mac. The 77% OFF discount offer ends on August 18th, 2020.
