I didn’t fall in love with Waves Berzerk on the first listen, but it’s one of those plugins that tend to grow on you after a while. I didn’t get the expected results at first simply because this isn’t a traditional distortion plugin.
Berzerk includes ten different distortion algorithms, ranging from classic overdrive to modern fuzz and everything in between. You can fully customize each algorithm to achieve a variety of distortion tones.
Some distortion modes are quirkier than others, and you’ll find enough variety to suit a range of sound sources, from guitars and synths to vocals.
The versatility on offer is one of Berzerk’s best features. It’s the Mad Hatter of distortion plugins, capable of sounding creamy, lush, or completely berserk, as its name suggests.
Speaking of going berserk, the aptly named “Go Berzerk” button randomizes the distortion parameters. In a way, it feels like rolling a D20 die and hoping for the best. It comes up with a completely different distortion flavor each time.
This is the perfect tool to have at hand when you run fresh out of ideas during a long sound design session. Insert Berzerk on a channel and keep toggling the randomization button until it spits out an interesting texture.
Most combinations won’t sound great, but you will occasionally roll the beloved 20, the proverbial critical hit, a distortion flavor that slays the inspiration-eating monster right between the eyes.
I obviously miss playing tabletop RPGs (ah, those long pre-parenthood days), but the bottom line is that Berzerk is an inspirational distortion tool worth adding to your sound design arsenal.
