Waves Audio offers the V-Comp (typically $149) vintage compressor VST plugin as a free download for all BPB readers. The offer ends on November 1st at 9 a.m. EST.
As most BPB readers know by now, my birthday is on Halloween. 🎃
So, every year, I try to give something back to BPB readers as a thank you for your continuous support. Your comments, emails, and feedback mean the world to me, and running BPB wouldn’t make sense without you.
This Halloween, with the help of our awesome friends at Waves Audio, all Bedroom Producers Blog readers can get the V-Comp plugin for free!
Let’s take a quick look at V-Comp.
Waves Audio V-Comp
V-Comp is a Neve-style vintage compressor plugin from Waves Audio. It’s part of the V-Series plugin collection that recreates the sound of analog studio gear.
Interestingly, the plugin is designed as a bus compressor with a fixed threshold. So, instead of a threshold knob, you use the input knob to control how much of the signal will get compressed.
I prefer this way of using a compressor because I find it more intuitive. The idea is to add volume to get the compressor working and level out the signal. Then, you can compensate for the difference in volume using the output knob.
Waves Audio also included a couple of interesting additions, such as a built-in limiter and a de-esser, both of which can be turned on or off depending on your needs. You also get the typical compressor controls for compression ratio and attack/release times.
The “Analog” knob is another useful addition. It lets you adjust the amount of saturation that is added to the signal so you can control how much V-Comp colors the audio.
Here’s a quick tutorial on getting a good-sounding mix with V-Series plugins, including V-Comp.
Even if you don’t intend on using V-Comp, the tutorial is a useful watch. It explains the basics of using a compressor and EQ to improve your mix.
And the video below explains how to use V-Comp to get the most out of your vocals.

onThanks and happy birthday in advance!
Does seem to install correctly via Waves Central, but it doesn’t show up (after scans) in Bitwig, Mixbus or Live. It does and works in Mixcraft, weirdly enough.

onWhile I appreciate all BPB does, I would never install a Waves product on my computer even if they paid me.
lars
onHi Michael,
i am new to the world of plug ins, so if it is more than obvious, please excuse my lack of knowledge, why would you never install a Waves product?
Thank you, lars
Frits van Zanten
onI quit Waves because of the tsunami of mails they send you as well as the, certainly for beginners, and I’m still lost, their update/upgrade policy. You soon will get alarming mails that the plugins you bought will no longer work if you don’t…., something with versions etc. You can get good plugins, that are often on sale, so mostly 30 bucks, but you have to get clear what their ecosystem is. Waves is very confusing for the uninitiated. And again, many mails, with varying prices and continuous sales offers and ‘warnings’. But I think someone will, might or should respond here to explain how it works and how you can proceed best. Once in three years I regret not having one of their products. Oh, and about twice a year there’s a free plugin. One at about Christmas I believe.
lars
onThank you Frits, for your input. That does sound alarming! (no pun) I still have to come to terms with the whole plug in world, outside of just using them i mean….
Frits van Zanten
onA tip based om my own experience: apart from (free) plugins you may also see offers for (free) sound/sample libraries, like for Kontakt. The difference with plugins (Megabytes (MB)) is they take a lot more space (Gigabytes (GB)) on your drives. If you have a lot of free space and/or large drives that won’t be an issue, but when that is not the case your computer might get slow or even stop working (which happened to me). So check beforehand how large the library is and how much space you have left. Some manufacturers also keep their zip-files after installing so a library of 10GB may take 15GB on your drive. When you do this three times it adds up. Using libraries like this requires some knowledge about file/disk management. Before you start downloading large libraries I’d advise to watch some tutorials on YT about (for instance) Kontakt libraries, to get a feel for it. Something free that makes you feel ‘why not’ may cost you a lot of time.
lars
onHi Frits, thank you for the tips, but i won’t use sound/sample packs. If i can’t come up with my own sounds anymore, it’s time to quit. For me that is, i just don’t believe in that. There are so many great instruments i have already on top of my electric guitar, bass synth, Vibraphone, Harmonium, Rhodes…..why would i need sounds and samples from someone else?
But i appreciate your input, thank you!
MRugaW
onHi Lars. The most alarming issue with Waves products is that after about a year or so of usage you are required to update to the newest version to “enjoy” the latest improvements that come with the new version (Look up Waves Update Policy for more details).
MOST plugin developers offer all future updates for free, that’s why Waves products are so controversial. But what I will say is this: It will take a couple of years before your Waves Product becomes unusable without updating. I have been using Berzerk Distortion and other plugins just fine since 2021 without the need to update.
Personally, I don’t mind the numerous email blasts, especially the “How to” videos and Blog posts.
lars
onThank you MR,
that part of the plug in universe is what gives me the most head aches, i have no mind for all that unfortunately. I used to record on 4 track tape and hard disk recorder, just hit record and play…. wonderful! Except for the editing of course, but for my music it worked perfectly.
Diego
onIars,
Ignore these people, they are amateurs, hobbyists. There’s been a trend of these people complaining about Waves on Facebook, etc. These complaints are utterly non-sense.
I have lots of Waves plugins, Been using them since version 9, and still running fine on my computer.
Waves plugins are awesome. They are stable, reliable and have been used in the industry for decades now.
And there’s always a chance to get them for free a few times per year. So I strongly suggest you to grab any Waves plugins when they come free. Be alert.
Also, Waves support is very responsive and helpful.
Just make a backup of your system (you could use the free Macrium Reflect for that. Highly recommended program anyway), so that you can restore your computer to a previous state just in case you regret installing Waves Central and don’t want these plugins anymore.
Go ahead and try it for yourself.
No offense but these people complaining about Waves are idiots.
Frits van Zanten
onI don’t feel offended when I’m called an amateur or a hobbyist. I do this for fun, I don’t publish/distribute my ‘music’ and I don’t make money with it. Hence I visit a bedroom producer’s blog. I think you hit the hammer on the nail. When you are a pro and can spend a lot of time and money on your gear Waves might be interesting. Upgrading, updating and maintenance are part of your job. You might even have hired someone to do that for you. But exactly for amateurs and hobbyist, with less time (for maintenance and acquiring knowledge about IT-ecosystems) and money Waves might be confusing and resource consuming.
This also is the first time I read the recommendation to make a backup before installing plugins of a particular brand.
And instead of judging or recommending the question might be better answered by an explanation of their updating system, including benefits, risks and the appropriate ways of action required.
lars
onThanks Diego,
i will look into the Macrium Reflect program, as i replied to the other comments, i have to come to terms with the whole plug in universe outside of just using them and that part gives me the most severe head aches.
lars
onOh and an “Amateur” is someone who does something because he loves doing it. Not because he is not good at it. Just saying.
sebastian
on> No offense but these people complaining about Waves are idiots.
they’re not and you sound like a shill. theres a million better plugin companies out there, people still buying at waves are doing themselves and the community a disservice. educate yourself before spewing nonsense next time, thank you.
AuLt
onThe main issue with Waves plugins is that they sound terrible, it’s mostly old code recycled in plugins marketed for people who like more to collect plugins than making music.
Their Update Policy is disruptive and becomes an unaffordable risk when working with deadlines, you’ll not have peace of mind and you’ll spend most of your time doing IT work than music (hence Waves “collectors” usually being angry people like the one in this thread calling people idiots).
The enemies of being creative, doing a stellar job and earning money with music are:
– Buying choice paralysis bargains plugin packages
– Using plugins with intruding authorization methods, and in this, Waves Update Policy is the greatest offender in the market.
P.S. Happy Birthday BPB!
AMS
onI have personally experienced issues with Waves’s digital rights management that have caused many projects to become unusable due to strange, invasive updates made without my consent. I’ve only ever had this problem with Waves plugins in particular
lars
onThank you AMS,
that sounds awful! Why would they do this? What do they get out of it? Why not make it as easy to use your products as humanly possible? Oh well, forget that i asked…
AMS
onjust miserliness, and wanting to make sure they have as Orwellian a DRM system as possible- it’s not made specifically to mess things up and make your life harder, but it certainly ends up having that effect in my opinion . I’ve never had the feeling of panic well up quite like I have when my Waves plugins got squirrely on me when I went to open a project, and they’re the only ones I’ve ever had multiple instances of a problem with
I even sent them an e-mail at one point telling them as much as their plugins have become part of my workflow, it’d be financially irresponsible of me to continue to use things which I know aren’t ultimately reliable and are capable of throwing my work into such disarray- spending unpaid hours/days redoing work you already finished because you have to scramble to replace your PAID plugins with FREE ones that work better is just crazy but it’s become the landscape
lars
onThanks AuLt, very interesting, i still have to find that out. And i agree, if you are not at ease, to use your plug ins when and how you see fit, having to worry about if it will work next week, that is just insane, i cannot see why any company would even go near that. But again, i know and understand so little about how all that really works, a lot to learn for me for sure.

onHappy birthday, and thank for the present :-)
I couldn’t open the link to Waves, using Opera browser. I guess it could be because I use adblocker.
So I changed browser, and then the link works fine. Just saying, if anybody else should experience the same issue.
Charlie
onIn case it helps anyone else:
Nothing happened when I clicked the link — probably due to ad blockers as others have mentioned (Chrome / Win11 here).
But copying the link and pasting into the address bar of a new browser window worked fine and took me straight to Waves.
james
onIt redirects through a tracker that ublock doesn’t like. So yeah copy/paste is the way.

onHappy Birthday and thanks for the freebie brother. I didn’t know this range was based on the Neve stuff (though it does makes sense). With knowing that it is meant to be used as a bus comp, I’m wondering if it’s based on the 33609 and not the 2254?

I would like to have that plugin from Waves, looks really cool, pls pls.

onNot even worth it. Analog Obsession Neve stuff is better and more accurate than this. Also even when you get this for free, next year you will need to pay for update to use those plugins. Waves can take a walk If you ask me.
