Fracture Sounds has released String Trio as part of the free Blueprint series for Kontakt Player.
The Fracture Sounds Blueprint series has become one of the best and most reliable sources of high-quality free instruments. If you’re an aspiring media composer, the Blueprint series is a must-have collection.
Blueprint libraries are compatible with the free Kontakt Player (v7 or higher).
It’s hard to believe that this series of free instruments is already fourteen instruments deep. String Trio is the fourteenth installment, following the likes of Gentle Brass and Textural Violin.

String Trio combines solo violin, viola, and cello recordings to create an intimate, emotionally charged ensemble patch.
Large string ensembles can be epic, grandiose, and incredibly moving. But, sometimes, there’s nothing quite as emotionally impactful as a small string combo.
While you have the strength of the ensemble, you retain the intimacy and fragility of each instrument, and those qualities are very potent in composition.
String Trio offers three articulations: Sustain, Staccato, and Pizzicato.
The long Sustain articulation is likely to be used most because you can approach it in many ways, especially when using a fader to adjust dynamics.
It sounds beautiful when held, and, in shorter bursts, it has a lovely decay. It’s particularly nice when mapping out the harmony with chords on one beat of each bar, leaving wide open space for melody.
The trio ensemble is also a great opportunity to think about the voicings more carefully because it’s not a dense sound; everything you add or don’t add has value.
The Staccato and Pizzicato articulations are very good; I particularly like the staccato because I’m a sucker for short, sharp ostinato patterns, even if I’ve heard them a million times.
The interface is as you’d expect from a Blueprint release; it’s clean and straightforward.
You can add expression to your performance by adjusting the Dynamics control as you play (mod wheel/CC1).
The Colour control is an EQ that quickly shapes the tone from dark to bright.
Additional controls allow you to adjust the Reverb amount and Stereo Width from mono to wide.
Another very cool thing about this library is that it features three microphone positions: Close, Mid, and Far. You can adjust/mute/solo each position to ensure the ensemble sits where you want it to. You can also adjust these on the fly to add more depth or intensity.
String Trio is another great addition to the Blueprint series, and I hope Fracture Sounds keep these coming for a long time.
