If you want to add more interesting harmonic content to your tracks, we have a great free plugin for you today.
Resonator is a free plugin from Thony Audio, a seemingly new developer. That’s safe to assume since their website looks brand new.
Nevertheless, Resonator is an exciting plugin that’ll be a great addition to your sound design toolkit.
It’s designed to “color your sounds with vibrant, tonal resonance” so that you can take any sound, even white noise, and create lush harmonies.
We can see in this demo that they started from a noisy stack of sounds and created really cool chords from it using Resonator.
This type of sound is very popular in high-energy EDM, hyperpop and the like, but I reckon that this plugin could work great things like ambient music too.
As an ambient music composer myself, I do this sort of thing a lot, where I start from something like an atonal field recording and turn it into something tonal.
Resonator definitely seems up to the task, especially since you can blend in the dry signal as well, so you still maintain the texture of your source sound.
Using Resonator is fairly straightforward. It has 2 flavours: saw, which is more harmonically rich, and square “for a subtler tone that resonates with only odd harmonics.”
You can then dial in the decay and colour of the resonator to your liking, as well as blend in the dry signal as we mentioned earlier.
Keep in mind that square waves have an instant release, so Thony Audio suggests a longer decay when using the square wave.
Then comes the fun part. You can resonate whatever you feed this plugin with up to 7 pitches and create whatever chord you want.
It allows you to fine-tune, pan, and gain stage each pitch, which is a great way to customize the chord.
There are 8 modules available for this, so you can create a unique chord in each one and use automation to build a chord progression out of them.
Finally, you can use live MIDI input to control this plugin if you prefer that. You can also save presets to have your favorite chord progressions ready to go at any time.
Resonator is available as a VST2 and VST3 plugin for Windows and macOS.

onLooks like a carbon copy of Rezonator from Xynth
Brenny C
onWhich is $25.
Sure, $25 isn’t expensive to most producers, but this one is FREE so you do the math.

onVery cool plugin! I’ve used Khs Resonator and Resonator from Unfiltered Audio Byoyme, but except for the modulation tools, these resonators have fewer options than this plugin. kHs Resonator has only one frequency, and BYOME has 4, but no panning.

onI dig the easy download, not hoop-jumping, or putting in cart, or having to open an account. Just a download from google drive

onIs the mac version working ok for anyone? Here the UI scaling is broken (pitch dials are oversided) and I have to drag it to almost fill the screen to get it to all fit in.
Also are there supposed to be any presets? CLicking on the preset bar just opens a tiny grey square instead of a full menu.
Maybe it needs a little more work. And ideally an AU too.
Thony Audio
onThanks for reporting the issue. I will test it again on macOS and keep you updated.
The preset menu is empty because the plugin does not come with stock presets. However, you can save your own by clicking the menu in the top right corner. The preset will be automatically saved and will appear below the preset bar the next time you open it.

onSame for me as Bob – on MacBook Air / Intel / Monterey 12.7.4. GUI not scaling right, don’t get all the controls. Don’t hear an effect either.

on@Thony Audio. I would love an AU version of this, too – any chance of signing up so you can let us know if / when one is available?

onIt is sounding really good on drums, but cant seem to automate between the ‘snapshot’ numbers, which would make it 10x better. Also followed the instructions for where to place the presets but it doesn’t seem to find them (windows)
Thony Audio
onI’m glad you enjoyed the plugin! The ‘snapshot’ numbers are designed to be automatable parameters. In your DAW, you can try changing the snapshot number, then check the recently changed parameters and create an automation for that.

onHi Thony Audio , I followed the notes.. but there is no “User” folder, just “Users” on my windows- which has the public/public documents folders ..any way this doesnt work for showing presets..and also creating a “User” folder with the same file path didn’t work either..
Thanks i got the automation working now.. sounds really nice
Poberega
onThony Audio thanks for the plugin! Many users have a problem with launching it because of the “dist” archive. If you unzip it, the problem disappears. You can simply update the plugin download on the site with the unzipped “dist” and the problem will disappear.

onHey man, having some issues trying to get this to boot up, have tried putting the Thony audio folder in the correct location, my computer just keeps saying youre and unidentifed dev. Please let me know what to do.
Dave
onHi. Presets don’t open. VST crashes in Reason. All folders and folders are in the specified locations. Looking forward to a working version!

ontake it all back – put in wrong documents- very nice plugin- thanks Thony Audio

onHi. Solved the problem with the plugin in FL Studio. The plugin works and it’s great! 1) Install the plugin according to the author’s instructions. 2) Go to the Thony Audio folder in Public Documents, there will be a “dist” archive in it. Unzip it. The plugin will start.

onThere sure are a lot of user errors being acknowledged in these comments. Lol. Do you all immediately hop onto BPB the moment you come across even the slightest problems with a plugin before attempting to figure it out yourself?
Folks, please try to work out on your own any issues you experience with new software before getting onto BPB to call out a dev? It’s a little ridiculous.
Thank you, Thony Audio. This is a really nice VST that has instantly earned a permanent spot in my plugin arsenal. :)

onSadly, I can’t get this plugin to work (in Cakewalk). VST loads and I can hear the ‘dry’ signal OK but no processed output at all. I’ve double checked file locations per installation instructions and have unzipped the ‘Dist’ zip file as suggested and tried a few other options, all to no avail. So sorry if I’m being a bit ‘thick’ (noting Brenny C’s comments) but it looks like I’m hitting a brick wall with this one. Shame, because it looks really interesting … and I think the Dev has done a a really nice job with the GUI aesthetic. Hopefully others will continue to enjoy this plugin.
tbrann
onSame here on Waveform 12. No processed output.
