Developer Bipolar Audio has just released a new and free 909 drum machine plugin called BP-909.
It’s no secret that Roland drum machines are highly sought after and used in many genres by countless producers.

A great example is the TR-909, which was the successor to the TR-808, and was the first Roland drum machine to utilize samples, and have MIDI functionality.
The Roland TR-909 has been used by none other than Daft Punk, Thom Yorke, Aphex Twin, and many more musicians.
And now, you can enjoy the sounds of this unit, as processed by Bipolar Audio in their new free BP-909 plugin.
BP-909 is available on unableton.com and while they don’t provide much info on the functionality of the plugin, I was able to find a detailed user demo.

First, I should say that I love the GUI. Overall, it looks a lot like the TR-909, and the beveled edges and shadows make the plugin look very realistic.
It contains all the standard elements you’ll find in a drum machine. Kick, snare, 2 toms, rimshot, clap, closed and open hi-hats, as well as a ride and crash cymbal.
You get some control over the individual samples, similar to the functionality of the original Roland TR-909.
Almost all elements except for the rimshot and clap can be tuned separately. And there is also a global tuning control, should you want to tune the entire kit up or down.
The kick, snare, toms, and hi-hats each have a dedicated decay knob, and you can adjust the attack for the kick and snare, which gives you some flexibility over their sound.
As one user review mentions on unableton.com, it would be great if there were pan knobs for each drum/cymbal. Either way, the samples sound very good.
Finally, there are 5 presets available which offer different flavors of this drum machine.
BP-909 is available as a VST2 and VST3 plugin for Windows as well as a WAV file sample pack.
Bipolar Audio says that the macOS version is coming soon in VST2, VST3, and AU formats. In the meantime, you can still enjoy BP-909 samples as WAV files, regardless of your operating system.
