Developer Consistent Interruption has released Tumult, a free noisemaker plugin for Windows and Linux.
Adding noise externally (outside the instrument in use, and not as a side-effect of a particular FX chain) is something that many composers might underutilize.
I know I’ve been guilty of making drastic changes at times rather than focusing on textural noise when searching for the perfect sound.
Whether it’s subtle white noise, vinyl crackle adding warmth, or something more intrusive, we can find countless examples of sounds that wouldn’t feel the same without the noise (not just those relaxing lo-fi YouTube mixes).
Tumult isn’t available for macOS (Windows and Linux only), so please feel free to share any potential download/install issues in the comments, as I can’t install this one.
The cleverly named Tumult gives us 100 distinct noises to add to our audio signal to create or alter the texture.
The noises are arranged in the following categories:
- Noise
- Vinyl
- Static
- Machine
- Hum
- World
Many of the noises are expected, such as vinyl hiss/crackle variations and VHS noise. But Tumult offers some more unlikely noises, like an Oven, Fridge, or Washing machine. It even has some otherworldly Alien noises.
If you like the go-to Vinyl noise approach, iZotope’s somewhat aging Vinyl is still a worthwhile freebie.
Additionally, Tumult allows you to import samples to add to your audio signal.
You can use the main Mix knob to add the noise to the audio signal and fine-tune the effect with a five-band EQ that controls the frequency response of the noise.
The EQ is a nice addition because it allows you to mold the noise to fit any sound perfectly.
Tumult has three modes: Raw, Duck, and Follow.
The noise plays without any influence in Raw mode; it ducks with the audio signal in Duck mode, and in Follow mode, it only plays when the audio signal is playing.
