Tilr has released FILT-R, a free modulated filter plugin for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
If you’ve been reading Bedroom Producers Blog lately, you’ll know Tilr has been on a roll. Their recent GATE-12 and TIME-12 plugins received plenty of praise from both me and BPB readers in the comments. And for good reason—they’re free, fun to use, and inspiring.
With FILT-R, Tilr adds a filter modulator to their growing line-up of modulated effects, building what’s beginning to look like a freeware alternative to Cableguys’ ShaperBox. First, we got a gate, then a volume/delay modulator, and now a filter that reminds me of the classic FilterShaper.
If you’ve been around since the heyday of dubstep, you’ll probably remember the hype around modulated filters with drawable envelopes. Tools like FilterShaper were new at the time and essential for crafting those signature wobbly basslines.
These days, we’ve got a bunch of similar options, including TAL-Filter-2 and Filter Force, but Tilr’s take still stands out because I think it’s perfect for use in live performances.
FILT-R comes with six unique filter models—Moog, 303, Clean, and more—and each model includes five filter modes: LP, HP, BP, Notch, and Peak.
So, there’s already plenty of flexibility in the filter department, but the plugin’s real strength is in its modulation section. You can draw up to twelve user-defined curves and easily switch between them on the fly, making it ideal for live sets or complex automation.
Like Tilr’s previous plugins, the interface is clean and easy to use. The curve editor gives you complete control over modulation shapes, and you can sync everything to your host tempo or let it run freely in Hz. There’s also a built-in sequencer and randomizer, MIDI and audio trigger options, plus envelope followers for both cutoff and resonance.
Even if you already own a modulated filter plugin, FILT-R is worth a look. It’s nicely designed and offers more features than any other freeware filter and modulation combo I’ve tested.
FILT-R is available as a free download and works in VST3 and AU formats on Windows, macOS, and Linux. You can get it for free via GitHub. There’s no need to register, and there’s no activation; it’s just a simple download.
Also, don’t forget to check out Tilr’s other releases, GATE-12 and TIME-12, if you haven’t already. They make a solid trio.
