The highest-priced option is the €50 String Quartet from Salu. It features two violins, viola, and cello performed by the M4GNET quartet at the Arvo Pärt Centre in Estonia.
This is a pretty versatile choice, with six microphone positions and articulations covering sustains, legato, portato, staccato, spiccato, pizzicato, tremolo, crescendos, swells, arpeggios, and more experimental repetitions and flybys.
The €20 Ronroco comes from the Andea collection. This ten-string, mandolin-like South American instrument was performed by composer and multi-instrumentalist Richard Harvey, with four microphone positions and articulations including sustains, portatos, staccatos, bends, trills, chords, tremolos, and dead notes.
If you need serious low-end brass, Koenigsberger Cimbassi a3 normally costs €46. The three-player cimbasso ensemble comes from Metropolis Ark 1 and was recorded at Berlin’s Teldex Scoring Stage with four microphone positions. Its articulations include sustains, two marcato lengths, staccatos, crescendos, flutter crescendos, and swells.
The €48 Piccolo Flute is taken from Berlin Woodwinds. It offers six microphone positions, true legato, playable runs, sustains, marcatos, staccatos, repetitions, and several trill variations.
Forest is the most sound-design-focused choice and easily my favorite. It’s normally priced at €29, and comes from Dominik Eulberg’s Habitat and blends analog synthesizers with orchestral recordings. Eight patches cover every season during the day and night, while the mod wheel morphs between the electronic and acoustic layers.
