We’ve seen quite a few freebies from Lotus Sound Audio over the last couple of years, including the Teletronix-inspired LA2-FOX Compressor plugin. This time, the Swiss-based developer is back with an update to another compressor plugin, Silver Fox.
Silver Fox MK2 is a VCA-style compressor plugin that you can download for free right now. Additionally, if you like the developer’s work and would like to show your appreciation, you can become a Patreon or donate via PayPal.
Vintage VCA compressors, like the iconic dbx 160, are famous for their fast response and ability to compress effectively without sacrificing character, making them extremely versatile devices.
Silver Fox MK2 aims to deliver that effectiveness and versatility by authentically mimicking VCA-style behaviour, an area that the developer has enhanced since the original version.
To complement the enhanced behavioural emulation, Lotus Sound Audio has implemented new attack and release curves to ensure the most musical response.
In addition to the new attack/release curves, Silver Fox MK2 features a new batch of factory presets to get you started.
Except for an interface skin change, Silver Fox MK2 appears very much like the original on the surface. Under the hood, the developer promised improved CPU performance.
I’m a little late to this plugin, but I’ve heard enough from Lotus Sound Audio to want to give it a try. I know there have been some small issues around the download/install process with previous releases, but in terms of sound, Lotus Sound Audio plugins have shown some genuine progression over the last few years, and I’m sure they will continue to improve.
Downloads are attached as .rar files, and since macOS doesn’t natively support that file type, you’ll need a utility tool like The Unarchiver to extract the install files.
It’s been so long since I used a Windows system, but I remember using programs like WinRAR, which, for all I know about recent developments in Windows, could have disappeared decades ago.
While I wouldn’t win a time-sensitive quiz on the basic functionality of a modern Windows system, I’m more up to date with time-sensitive issues like the release of QuietFormat’s Melino (sample-based virtual instrument), which is available at a special intro price for just a few more days (the offer ends on August 14, 2025).
