TapeFi is a brand-new developer celebrating the launch of its debut plugin, Fail.
Fail is a cassette tape emulator that recreates the much sought-after imperfections of analog tape machines.
TapeFi spent months refining the nostalgic and unpredictable character of tape to package it in a straightforward, easy-to-use interface.

The interface is simple, with a focus on functionality rather than overdoing it with tape machine visuals, but it still looks great. It’s clean with a retro vibe.
Fail features six distinct tape modes, each offering variations on the core characteristics of tape: tone, wear, and unpredictability.
I like lo-fi plugins like Fail; I like Flaw by Tritik, and even pull out Native Instruments Vinyl now and then, for some old-school record flavour.
However, I don’t always do too much with them; it’s often just to add some dirt to a particular sound without necessarily giving the entire song a vintage feel.
After listening to Fail in multiple scenarios, it does the subtle dirt and instability that I love very well, but it’s capable of being much more transformative.
Along with the six tape modes, Fail features Hiss, Heat, Drop, Mix, and Melt controls.
The Hiss control does exactly what you’d expect; the Heat control adjusts Fail’s custom distortion engine, and this is where the plugin can become quite destructive, in a good way.
The impact is different depending on the selected tape mode, but Heat ranges from analog warmth to almost over-saturation; the sweet spot where everything is intact enough to be coherent, but it’s rough and crunchy around the edges.
The Drop control adjusts the probability of typical tape glitches like dropouts and volume dips.
The Melt slider allows you to introduce pitch drift through tape wow and flutter.
TapeFi talks about creating audio tools that feel alive with imperfections and soul, and that makes it very interesting to see what comes next.
Fail is available in AU, VST2, and VST3 formats for macOS (10.95 or higher) and Windows (7 and higher).
