unAbleton releases Volture, a FREE distortion plugin for Windows

Developer unAbleton has released Volture, a free distortion plugin for Windows, available in 64-bit VST3 format only.

Volture is a stompbox-style distortion with a bright yellow GUI that clearly nods toward classic overdrive pedals like the SD-1. And the interface looks like it was designed for a guitarist’s pedalboard.

But at the same time, the stickers and slightly playful design make it clear that this isn’t trying to be a serious guitar pedal emulation. The developer describes Volture primarily as a distortion for synths, and more specifically for 303-style basslines and acid sequences.

That said, just like the Roland TB-303 itself, Volture doesn’t need to be used as its developer intended. The 303 was never meant to become the defining sound of acid music, and in the same spirit, Volture works perfectly fine on far more than just squelchy basslines.

I fired up my old Windows laptop to try this one on some synth leads and drums, and it sounded pretty cool. The tone is slightly more synth-friendly than some standard guitar distortions, so it’s worth a look even if you already have a bunch of distortion plugins.

The control set is as simple as it gets. You have just two knobs: one for the distortion amount and one for gain. There’s also a built-in limiter which helps keep levels under control when you push the plugin hard.

If you’ve ever used a distortion pedal or effect before, you’ll know exactly how to use Volture within seconds. There’s basically no learning curve; just put it on a channel and adjust the distortion amount to taste.

Is Volture an essential download, though? Definitely not. Most of us already have more distortion plugins than we realistically need (I think I have over twenty – yikes!).

That said, it does sound good, and I’m always tempted to add another distinct flavor to my distortion toolkit. It’s because I like trying new effect flavors from time to time to keep things fresh.

I also really like the overall design. The interface is clean and simple, which goes a long way for a plugin you might reach for often.

Downloading Volture is also simple. On the unAbleton website, you enter a price of your choice. You can donate if you like, or enter zero to get it for free. Add your email address, and you’re good to go.

The biggest downside is platform support. Volture is Windows-only, so macOS users are out of luck. If you want a fun, free synth-friendly distortion for macOS, check out BPB Dirty Filter.

But if you’re on Windows and looking for a super simple, no-nonsense distortion that simply sounds good and works well on synths (and more), Volture is definitely worth checking out.
