Audio Assault, the company behind Amp Locker, has been going strong for several years now. In celebration of their 12th year in business, they’re giving away the amp sim Invicto for free for a limited time.
Invicto is part of the ReAmp 2 collection inside Amp Locker, based on the Peavy Invective 120, which is an all-tube high-gain amplifier loved by metalheads.
Come to think of it, the plugin actually resembles the relatively new Invective MH Mini Head, developed together with Periphery-guitarist and producer Misha Mansoor.
Please note that you need Amp Locker to run Invicto. It can be downloaded for free at Audio Assault’s homepage.
Combined with the right impulse responses or cab sims within Amp Locker, you could probably get some proper metal tones out of this little plugin. Tight chugs and screaming leads should be within reach if you dial it in correctly.
The interface is clear and simple, like you’d expect from a guitar amp.
Adjust the pre-gain before running your signal through a standard low, mid, and high EQ before a post-gain stage.
Invicto also boasts a resonance knob and a presence knob to adjust the tone further. And that’s pretty much it.
The Amp Locker interface you load Invicto into also has its own features, like input, gate, HQ-processing, and more for additional tweaking.
If you lack a metal powerhouse in your virtual guitar set-up, grabbing Invicto for free seems like a pretty good deal.
I think the magic really lies in finding the right combination between preamp, amp, impulse response, and cab sim to approximate something that sounds real without falling into what I like to call the digital buzzing “mosquito”-trap.
Because let’s be honest. There’s been a lot of bad tones floating around, especially if you’re used to actually hearing and feeling a tube amp at full blast. While it’s hard to compete with the real thing, technology has come a long way in the past few years.
