MPE Emulator by Attila Magyar is a plugin that provides your ordinary MIDI controllers with new polyphonic expression capabilities and a lot of room for customization! It’s completely free and works on macOS, Windows, and Linux.
If you’re a REAPER user, there’s also a lightweight MPE Emulator Lite (JS) download available.
MPE Emulator takes single-channel raw MIDI data and turns it polyphonic before reaching your synthesizer plugin, opening up a vast potential for musical expressiveness by giving each note its own modulation.
I’ll take the liberty of quoting the developer: “single channel aftertouch (channel pressure), pitch bend, or any MIDI control change (CC) message into polyphonic by applying them selectively to the lowest, highest, oldest, or newest note, either across the whole keyboard or restricted to a range of keys based on a configurable keyboard split point. It can also remap and reshape controller data, and do various other tricks to increase the expressiveness of a musical performance.”
At the top of the UI, there’s a “main” window that handles the big picture: it lets you determine how the keyboard is split and how many channels can have independent control at once, for instance.
There are also nine different “rule” windows where you decide MIDI in/out, modulation amount and target, curve behavior, and distortion amount.
You could use the mod wheel to control different parameters (and their range of operation) in your soft synth at the same time. You could also decide that the mod wheel only affects the top note in a chord, opening it up with a filter, or wiggling it with a pitch bend to create drama without affecting the rest of the harmony.
Perfect for creating movement, complexity, and breathing life into pads, chords, and leads.
Being able to pitch-bend particular elements without annoyingly affecting the entire sound is now within reach, as your previously single-channel MIDI keyboard is now an octopus.

MPE Emulator is available through GitHub and requires no sign-ups, registration, or logins.
