Developer DAWJunkie has released Peggio Jr, a free arpeggiator synth for macOS and Windows.
Whenever we speak about a new freebie from DAWJunkie, we rarely have to wait too long before the next one comes around.
It has only been a few weeks since we covered Mini-Menace, DAWJunkie’s free nod to the Arturia MicroBrute, and here we are, ready to check out another new release.
This time, it’s Peggio Jr, a free arpeggiator-based synth.
Peggio Jr is available in AU, VST, and AAX formats for macOS and Windows.
At its core, Peggio Jr isn’t too different from previous releases; it’s a two-oscillator synth with a filter and a few samples.
The samples this time around are a typewriter sound, a pluck, and an organ tone.
The thing that makes Peggio Jr different is that it’s not just about providing instantly usable sounds; it’s about creating instantly usable patterns.
While it shares the same quirky but user-friendly GUI design as all other DAWJunkie releases, Peggio Jr places its built-in arpeggiator engine front and centre.
The Arpeggiator section has two main blocks: Velocity and Length.
You can adjust the velocity or length of each step by clicking the step and dragging it up or down.
Alternatively, you can make sweeping adjustments by drawing a pattern or a straight line across the block, adjusting all steps simultaneously.
Adjusting these parameters adds another layer of movement and depth, and makes any pattern feel more human.
You can also tweak the sound with Unison, Width, and Detune controls, along with onboard FX (Saturation, Compression, Delay, and Reverb).
Peggio Jr has 25 factory presets that lend themselves well to dance music and techno; you get that old-school euphoric synth lead vibe.
But you can shape it to fit as needed if you’re not working on the next festival banger or the soundtrack for an all-night rave.
As quirky as DAWJunkie releases can be, we’ve come to know what to expect from them.
A fun name, a fun look, and fun sounds that producers of any level can easily make use of; Peggio Jr continues that trend.
