Golden DSP has released Shatter Clip, a free clipper plugin for macOS and Windows.
If there is one type of plugin I have seen dozens and dozens of over the past several years, it has to be the clipper. There are countless free clippers out there, and I doubt that most producers need another one right now.
We have had excellent free clippers for ages, starting with classics like GClip, followed by many newer options (such as LA-210). If you already have one or two good clippers in your plugin folder, I do not think Shatter Clip is something you really need to download.
That said, Shatter Clip is great in its own right. If you do not already have a go-to clipper, this one is definitely worth considering as your first proper clipping tool.
Shatter Clip, like any other clipper, is designed to push drums, buses, and full mixes louder by shaving off peaks before they hit the limiter. The goal is to create more headroom while keeping the punch and transient impact mostly intact.
The plugin offers three clipping modes. Hard Clip is the more aggressive digital option, Soft Clip is intended for smoother dynamic control, and Analog Clip is the more interesting one here.
Analog Clip uses a dual-band design that splits the signal at 120 Hz. It adds asymmetrical tube-style saturation to the sub-bass while keeping high-frequency transients cleaner. That is useful to keep in mind if you work with bass-heavy music and want clipping that does not immediately smear the low end.
The other useful feature I really like here is Auto-Gain. When working with clipping, it is easy to get fooled by level changes, so having automatic level matching makes gain staging easier and helps you judge whether the clipping is actually improving the sound.
The visual overview is also nice. Shatter Clip includes a 60 FPS oscilloscope that shows a ghost version of the original waveform and highlights the clipped material in pink. That definitely makes it easier to see how much of the peak you are shaving off.
There is also 4x oversampling for cleaner processing, a DC blocker for low-end cleanup, a safety brickwall ceiling, and a parallel mix control for blending some dry punch back in.
So, it’s a very nice package overall, and well worth a look if you’re still on the lookout for a clipper.
To download Shatter Clip for free, you need to enter your email address, but you do not have to confirm it before reaching the download page. The downloads are all ZIP files: the Windows installer is 5 MB, Windows VST3 with no installer is 3 MB, and the Mac download is 14 MB.
