Analog Obsession has released RazorClip, a free analog-based clipper plugin for Mac and Windows.
RazorClip offers five clipping modes, each modeled after a different analog circuit type. That’s really the core of what RazorClip offers, and the modes give you various distortion characters to work with.
The five options are Tape, XFMR, BJT, Tube, and Diode. By the way, if you’re into saturation, the Tape, Tube, and Diode are also available in our free BPB Saturator Plus plugin if you don’t already have it in your toolkit.
As for the other two modes, they are both fun to use, and I really like how XFMR sounds on synth bass.
XFMR models transformer-based saturation, the soft clipping that occurs when a transformer overloads and can no longer pass the full signal. This causes the waveform to flatten gently and results in a relatively subtle type of saturation that works great for warming up virtual synths.
BJT is based on bipolar junction transistor clipping, a transistor circuit topology that produces asymmetric harmonic content with a slightly harder edge than the transformer mode.
The controls are straightforward in classic Analog Obsession fashion. The Gain knob has 24 dB of gain compensation, giving you enough headroom to push the signal into clipping.
The Output knob runs from -24 dB to +24 dB, which is handy for gain staging within your DAW after the clipping stage has done its work.
The Blend knob is basically a dry/wet control. It lets you mix the clipped signal back with the clean signal and is particularly useful when you’re pushing the Gain harder.
Blending in some of the clean signal helps preserve transient information while still getting the grit and harmonic content from the clipped side.
The interface is resizable from 50% to 200% using a drag handle in the bottom right corner. Analog Obsession suggests saving your preferred size as a default preset in your DAW so that new instances open at the right scale automatically.
RazorClip is available as a direct free download from the Analog Obsession Patreon page (no registration). Mac users get a single installer, while Windows users can choose between an installer and a ZIP file containing the plugin files.
RazorClip is available in VST3, AU, and AAX Native formats (including Audiosuite) for macOS 10.11 and higher on both Intel and Apple Silicon. Windows 10 and 11 are supported in VST3 and AAX Native formats. Mac requires a graphics card with Metal support, and Windows requires OpenGL.
