Mariana is Moog’s software instrument designed primarily to create substantial bass sounds, rather than simply recreating a specific vintage synthesizer. Its architecture combines familiar Moog-style subtractive synthesis that we all know and love with a more elaborate modulation and effects workflow.
The instrument contains two separate synth layers, which you can stack or play duophonically. Each layer provides two oscillators and a dedicated sub-oscillator, so you have several ways to combine the stable low end with wider or more animated upper harmonics.
Two resonant Moog filters handle the primary layers, while a separate filter shapes the sub-oscillator. Stereo oscillators and crossover filtering let you widen a patch’s top end while keeping its deepest frequencies centered.
Mariana goes way deeper than a typical two-oscillator bass synth, though. Each layer includes three envelopes, three LFOs, and two random generators, with a modulation editor that can route movement to almost every parameter.
MIDI, MPE, and virtual CV are all supported. The virtual connections are particularly interesting if you own Moog’s Moogerfooger effects plugins, as Mariana and the effects can exchange modulation inside the DAW.
The built-in processing covers tube, tape, and overdrive saturation, compression, chorus, and delay. Real-time metering helps with level management, and the 200 factory presets cover basses alongside leads, percussion, and effects.
Mariana works as a standalone instrument or as a 64-bit plugin. Windows 10 users receive VST3 and AAX formats, while macOS 11.7 or newer adds Audio Unit support and runs on Intel and Apple Silicon processors.
There are two account steps after purchasing. The serial appears in your Plugin Boutique account, then you must create or sign in to a Moog Software account, register the serial, download the installer, and activate Mariana through its built-in licensing window.
